Power Boost in Sight as TCN Upgrades Amuwo Substation

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has assured electricity consumers of improved power supply as rehabilitation works at the Amuwo 132/33kV Transmission Substation advance steadily, with completion still set for July 2026.

In a statement issued on May 4, the company said the ongoing upgrade, which began in March, is progressing as planned under the supervision of its contractor.

“Rehabilitation works at the Amuwo 132/33kV Transmission Substation… are progressing steadily. The project… remains on track for completion in July 2026 as earlier announced,” TCN's General Manager Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah stated.

As part of the overhaul, modern Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) equipment is currently being installed, while two new 60MVA power transformers have been delivered to replace the existing 30MVA units. Upon completion, the substation’s capacity is expected to rise significantly, with an additional 60MVA boost to transmission capability.

TCN noted that the upgrade would address longstanding technical challenges. “This major overhaul will increase the substation's capability and eliminate the frequent breakdowns and downtime experienced with the old GIS,” the statement added.

To cushion the impact of the ongoing works on electricity consumers, the company said it had earlier deployed two mobile transformers. This intervention has enabled Eko and Ikeja Electricity Distribution Companies to continue power offtake, preventing a total blackout in affected areas.

While acknowledging the temporary inconvenience to customers, TCN appealed for patience. “We are mindful of the inconvenience to electricity customers and… appeal to affected electricity consumers to bear with us, as the ongoing works are aimed at increasing the Amuwo Substation’s capacity to deliver long-term benefits,” it said.

The company also reaffirmed its broader commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s power infrastructure. “We reaffirm our commitment to the continued expansion of transmission capacity nationwide to meet the growing demand for bulk electricity,” TCN added.

The Amuwo substation upgrade is part of ongoing efforts to stabilise and expand the national grid amid rising electricity demand across the country.
