TCN Boosts Abuja Power Supply with New 300MVA Transformer at Katampe

The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN has strengthened electricity transmission capacity in the Federal Capital Territory with the commissioning of a new 300MVA, 330/132kV power transformer at the Katampe Transmission Substation in Abuja.

The transformer, commissioned on Sunday, is expected to significantly improve bulk power supply to the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company for onward distribution to homes, businesses and industries across Abuja and neighbouring communities.

With the latest installation, the capacity of the Katampe 330/132/33kV substation has risen from 450MVA to 750MVA, marking a major upgrade in the nation’s transmission infrastructure.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, the General Manager, Transmission, Abuja Region, Engr. Musa Shuaibu, described the project as part of TCN’s ongoing drive to expand and modernise the national grid to meet rising electricity demand.

According to him, the addition of the new transformer will enhance grid stability, improve power delivery to distribution load centres and support more reliable electricity supply in the Federal Capital Territory and beyond.

Shuaibu further noted that the project reflects TCN’s commitment to strengthening transmission capacity nationwide in line with efforts to improve the efficiency of the power sector.

The transformer project was executed under the collaborative initiative between TCN and the World Bank aimed at rehabilitating and expanding Nigeria’s transmission network infrastructure.

Industry stakeholders believe the development will help ease pressure on existing transmission facilities while positioning Abuja for improved power availability amid growing energy demand.
