TCN, NSCDC Crack Down on Power Line Encroachers in Osun, Arrest Offenders

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), in partnership with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), has intensified enforcement against illegal activities under electricity transmission lines in Osun State, arresting offenders and ordering the removal of unauthorized structures.

The joint operation, led by TCN’s Principal Manager, System Lines, Gbenga Akeju, alongside NSCDC operatives from the Critical National Assets and Infrastructure Department, targeted individuals and businesses encroaching on restricted Right of Way (RoW) corridors beneath high-voltage 330kV and 132kV transmission lines.

During the exercise, officials enforced statutory safety clearances of 25 metres on both sides of 330kV lines and 15 metres for 132kV lines, in line with national regulations aimed at protecting critical infrastructure.

Areas affected by the clampdown included sections of the Osogbo–Ikeja West and Osogbo–Ayede 330kV transmission lines, as well as the Osogbo–Ede 132kV line, particularly around Oke-Onti and Hallelujah communities in Olurunda Local Government Area.

Authorities uncovered multiple cases of illegal occupation and commercial activities within the corridors. While some violators were arrested and taken into custody, others were directed to provide credible sureties and sworn undertakings to vacate the affected areas within a stipulated timeframe.

Speaking during the operation, Akeju warned that encroachment on transmission corridors poses serious threats to public safety and the stability of electricity supply nationwide. He stressed that the designated RoW areas are essential for protecting infrastructure and shielding communities from risks such as electrocution, fire outbreaks, vandalism, and power disruptions.

He also commended the NSCDC for its continued collaboration in safeguarding national assets, noting that enforcement actions and public sensitisation campaigns would be sustained across the region.
