DEMOCRACY DAY: FG DECLARES JUNE 12 AS PUBLIC HOLIDAY

The Federal Government has declared Friday, June 12, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate Nigeria’s Democracy Day.

The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo announced the declaration on behalf of the government, describing June 12 as a historic date that symbolises the courage, sacrifices and resilience of Nigerians in the struggle for democratic governance.

The Minister urged citizens to use the occasion to reflect on the nation’s democratic journey and recommit themselves to the values of rule of law, transparency, accountability and national unity.

Tunji-Ojo reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting democratic ideals, stressing that a secure and stable environment remains critical to sustaining democracy and driving national development.

He also assured Nigerians that the Ministry of Interior, in collaboration with relevant security agencies, would continue to strengthen internal security measures to safeguard lives and property across the country.

“As we mark this historic day, every Nigerian is encouraged to remain law-abiding, uphold the institutions that sustain our democracy, and remember that the strength of any democracy lies ultimately in the character of its citizens,” the Minister said.
