NEWS: SANUSI, SOLUDO LIKELY TO FACE PROBE

Two former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governors, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo and Alhaji Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, now the Emir of Kano are likely to have their tenures probed by the Federal Government of Nigeria. This was disclosed recently by reports emanating in government circles.

According to the reports, the probe of the two former CBN top chiefs is expected to cover their activities at the CBN between 2007 and 2014.

A top Presidency source who spoke under the condition of anonymity, disclosed that the probe, which was yet to get approval by President Buhari, would most likely focus on the printing of naira notes under the authorization of Soludo and the management of Apex Bank’s “surplus” finances under Sanusi, who is now the Emir of Kano.

According to the source, it is believed that the handling of projects and policies by the two ex-CBN governors had some issues that required some clarifications as it would also help to put to rest, nagging questions and also, help maintain their reputation.

However, political watchers are concerned that it took Sanusi’s recent criticisms of the incumbent administration, cautioning against engaging in acts that would make it end like the previous administration of President Goodluck Jonathan, for this intended probe.

Sanusi had during an economic summit criticized the Forex policies of the government, which, he argued had enabled some people to make huge money without any investment.

The Emir, while speaking had remarked that many prominent persons are now raking huge returns without investments on the Forex policies thereby making more billionaires while the common Nigerian manufacturer toils hard to obtain Forex.

Prof. Soludo on the other hand had also, while in Kaduna state at a function for APC governors recently, faulted some of the Forex policies of the incumbent government.

 Government sources have however, denied that the planned probe the two former CBN governors had anything to do with their criticisms of the government but this assertion has been rounding bashed by stakeholders who see it more as a witch-hunt intended to muzzle constructive criticisms, no matter how well intended it is.

The sources however maintained that the President’s fight against corruption is sincere and as such, any individual involved in any corruptive act, no matter the time the act was committed or his/her position, would not be spared.
