The recent pronouncements from the floor of the Senate of the national Assembly has elicited a wild jubilation among students of two of the foremost Polytechnics and College of Technology in Nigeria; Kaduna Polytechnic, KADPOLY and Yaba College of Technology, YABATECH.

This wild jubilation was as result of the plans by the Senate to commence the conversion of the two institutions to universities.

Already, two bills pertaining to the conversion of the institutions have on 16th Wednesday, November 2016, scaled through first reading during the plenary.
NAIJNEWSALERT Correspondent at the National Assembly reports that, the Bill on the conversion of Kaduna Polytechnic, tagged City University of Technology Kaduna Bill, 2016 (SB. 360) and the City University of Technology Yaba Bill (SB. 334)  were sponsored by Senator Jibrin Barau (APC, Kano) and Senator Gbenga Ashafa (APC, Lagos) respectively.
It is important to note that former President Goodluck Jonathan before his exit in 2015, had in 2010, moved to convert the two institutions to universities but the plans never saw the light of the day.
Both of these institutions establishments predate the nation’s pre-independence in 1960.
Yaba College of Technology which is popularly known and referred to as YabaTech established in 1947, has been dubbed the first citadel of higher learning in Nigeria whereas Kaduna Polytechnic was established in 1956 as a technical institution for the then Northern Nigeria, was upgraded to Polytechnic in 1961.
