CSR: MAKERA COMMUNITY HAILS NIGERIA BREWERIES… as Company Donates Medical Ward, Toilets, Hospital Equipment.

Makera, a community in Kaduna South Local Government Council which plays host to Nigeria’s top brewer, Nigeria Breweries Plc has hailed the efforts of the company for its consistency in its Corporate Social Responsibility, CSR.

As the Number One top brewer in the country, the Nigerian Breweries Plc has consistently maintained its relationship with its host community; Makera by ensuring that the plight of the people of the community remains topmost in its activities by constructing of a One Block Building which would be used as a medical ward, the provision of Hospital equipment and toilets at the Primary health care centre in the community.

Brewery Manager, Mr. Bolu Obawole while speaking during the commissioning noted that; “in line with our company’s Corporate Social
Responsibility policy of Winning with Nigeria, we maintain strategic
plans for communities within the areas that we operate, thereby
enhancing the quality of life of these communities”.

‘’The entire Makera Community is very dear to us, being our host
community in which we have operated our business smoothly in the past 54 years. So, we should reciprocate the gesture by identifying with
the cause of the well-being of our good host community”, Obawole stated.

‘’It is my believe that this project; coming as we celebrate our 70th
anniversary (last month), will be historic to the health centre and
would be put into good use for the great people of Makera as well as
to mankind, going by the important nature of these equipment in saving lives’’.

“We have been in Kaduna for the past 54 years and we are not
going to stop intervening in these areas that are worth our attention
or which we feel would have direct impact on the masses especially in
our host communities because, that is the only way we can give back to
the society and we are happy about it. So, as long as we enjoy good
relationship with our host communities we will continue to do more’’, the Brewery Manager stressed.

The projects which were commissioned included;
the construction of a building block and toilet facility, supply of hospital
equipment, delivery couch and record file cabinet and provision of
hospital furniture.

Investigations shows that the company (NB Plc) has carried out several
interventions in the area of food security, education, youth
empowerment, sports and health when in 2009, Nigerian Breweries Plc
built and donated a fully furnished hospital ward at the VVF Centre
at Hajia Sawaba General Hospital, Zaria Kaduna State to improve
healthcare delivery in the Northern region.

Further disclosures by the BM of the company reveals that, in 2011, NB Plc donated a CT scan machine, a mini-theater facility and a
female Orthopedic ward at the St. Gerards Catholic Hospital, Kakuri Kaduna.

Investing resources in the Makera Health Centre is in continuation of this focus and extension of the hand of friendship, Bolu Obawole stated.

Speaking at the event, the representative of the Honorable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Neyu Iliyasu; Director Primary Health Care in Kaduna South Local Government lauded the initiative of Nigerian Breweries Plc saying it has come at a time when the Hospital is
actually in high need of another medical ward.

The Director of the PHC in KDSLG recounting how the PHC had suffered in the past for want of another medical ward, appealed that more of medical intervention by the company should be carried out to boost maternal health.

Reassuring the community of the company’s readiness to always support the community, Mr. Danjuma John-Ekele, Public Affairs Manager (North), commended the KDSLG administration for “providing the enabling environment for businesses to thrive and give back to the society”.

Earlier at the event, the Traditional Ruler of Makera District, Alhaji Ibrahim Yusuf in his address, hailed the company stressing that “in terms of Corporate Social Responsibility, Nigerian Breweries Plc is up to date.

According to the Traditional Ruler, “NB Plc has so far renovated over 100 class rooms within Makera area as they have also drilled so many water bole holes thereby addressing the issue of water shortage
in the area”.

Ibrahim Yusuf also appealed to the company for a scanning center to be provided saying that, a spacious land with a Certificate of Occupancy has been allocated for that.

“The project, if embarked upon by the company will alleviate the
financial plight of women going to distant places and paying
exorbitant rates for scanning”, he stated.

Thanking the company for the kind gesture, the In-Charge of the facility Hajia Aisha Mohammed assured that the medical ward, toilets and
assorted hospital equipment will be well maintained for effective
usage.
