OPEN LETTER TO MR. PRESIDENT

Organised Labour in Nigeria have refused to remain quiet in the face of perceived injustice in the scheme of things especially as it relates to the structure of the management team of the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN.

DANGEROUS RUMOURS OF GAMBLING WITH THE LEADERSHIP OF TRANSMISSION COMPANY OF NIGERIA (TCN)

Rumour has been making the rounds for the past six months that you have concluded arrangement to appoint a former low-level Power Sector accounts staff (supposedly a professional accountant) to become the Chief Executive Officer of Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN). 

Many could not imagine that to be true, hence as Organized Labour we ignored it.  Unfortunately, this rumour has become stronger and in fact indications are that it will soon be true.  This is even more unfortunate after the waste and blunder of Manitoba Management Contract.

We raise questions as to why a clique wants to foist a very junior non-technical former staff of the Power Sector on his seniors who are technical professionals in the core business of TCN. Are his mates not of the rank Principal Manager and below?  Why would engineers of ranks Asst Gen Manager, General Manager, Executive Directors and Managing Director be sacrificed for an unknown and unqualified person from AfDB?  If he is facilitating funds, is it ethical for him to come preside over its disbursement or dispersal? 

Could it be that he is expected to come and do the bidding of his masters which will revolve around TCN votes, funds and contracts? Are the propagators of this obnoxious move aware that TCN if endangered through humiliation of career engineers would lead to colossal damage to already fragile but growing system?

We are surprised that a Government bedeviled by a shaky Power Sector arising from badly-timed and badly-implemented privatization would consider this irrational move.

As representatives of workers in the Sector, we send this notice that we would not allow a disruption of order and progress so far recorded after Manitoba misadventure.

Consequently, we advise Government to rescind this faulty move or take this letter as notice of declaration of dispute with power sector labour unions should it be that the ill-advised appointment becomes real.
