NIGER DELTA: TENSION BREWS AS CONOIL WORKERS CREW CHANGE IS REFUSED
Workers in the oil sector in oil rich Niger Delta have appealed to the Department of Petroleum Resources, DPR, an arm of the NNPC and oil giant coy; Chevron, to immediately come to their aid.
Reports coming from the region has it that tension is brewing up as, the management of ConOil, one of the oil majors has refused booking for crew change of its workers onboard of its off-shore platforms involving both the company's servicing contractors staff at Ango field, Auntie Julie, Mr. P and other locations located in Bayelsa and Ondo States over prolonged stay onboard, lack of adequate welfare, among others.
The workers expressed dismay on the alleged disdain treatment meted on them onboard, noting that what ConOil is interested about is the crude oil production and not personnel onboard healthcare, hence they do not care about their over stay in their platforms.
Our source revealed that one Mr. Daibo, the Safety Officer and Mr. Dare who is in charge of Booking of chopper are allegedly not doing their jobs properly as well as the ConOil management, which has resulted to them staying longer onboard for up to 60 days which according to them, looks like modern day slavery of workers in the sector.
The workers are appealing to the Department of Petroleum Resources, DPR, Multinational Oil and Gas company giant, Chevron to come to their aid in order to grant them freedom from what they described as modern day slavery job by ConOil, adding that the company has deprived them from joining any union.
They are urging the relevant regulation agencies such as NNPC, Department of Petroleum Resources, DPR, Chevron and others, to prevail on ConOil to do the needful in order to avert the looming crisis in the Oil and Gas industry in the Niger Delta.
