KADUNA PDP ACTIONS COULD HAVE PARTY REMAIN AS OPPOSITION BEYOND 2023
By Dogara Caesar
Arguably, the People's Democratic Party in Kaduna State had long been a failing and sinking ship under its current leadership.
A political party, serving as opposition that is seeking to stage a comeback in 2023 even after losing out in two consecutive elections despite being on top of the game from 1999 to 2015 shouldn't be so careless like the current rulers have been…
The long term crises has undoubtedly taken another dimension following the suspension of some caucus members who have helped to hold down the party and in fact, some remained with the party in thick and thin... Clearly, for a party in opposition trying to beat down a sitting government should try as much as possible to unite rather than finally bury an already failing party.
But first, before i go further in looking at consequences of the actions of the Party; What really is the cause of their suspension?
The question of what is the cause of their suspension can't be diverted from the fact that PDP in Kaduna has failed to maintain the ideals of a democratically driven political party, but an imposition affair of who gets what, when and how by the so called "owners" of the party in Kaduna.
The Working Committee of the party in Kaduna declared on the 16th day of May, 2020, in a press release that some members have been involved in anti party activities. -But clearly, information is limited, as a good number of party members don't really understand where this allegation is coming from -moreso, those behind the anti party allegation never stated how or the scenario to which their allegations is based upon. However, if calling for a free, fair and transparent Ward, Local Government and State Congresses following attempts by party leadership to sabotage the entire process is the sin of suspended persons…, then we are right to reaffirm that the party just succeeded in shooting it self on the foot.
Talking about interests and greed, the fact that the party is silently working towards reintroducing certain aspirants as candidates in 2023 cannot be over stated. I am not against any aspirant at any level -but democracy and a level playing ground should remain the ideal of a democratic PDP.
While faithful members are tasking the working committee to be truthful and to serve justice in all its affairs, it is indeed, only right that justice be served to all members in an attempt to bring the party together for the greater good and ahead of future elections.
Hence, the consequences of suspending key members of the party;
1) The party will be divided and will build a strong opposition against itself rather than against the ruling APC.
2) Nobody wins in this arrangement of creating a faction within the PDP because the time, efforts and resources that should be forwarded towards building a viable opposition will all be spent on trying to fix what has been broken when the need arises.
3) The suspended individuals, if not given justice and setting up a reconciliation process now before it becomes too late.., are capable of creating a long lasting damage and could see the party remain opposition even beyond 2023 and long after.
-There is no doubt that politics is a game of who gets what, when and how.. but the least that the Rulers need now -is creating unnecessary problems of making issues even more complex. Therefore, the party have no luxury of options than to do the rightful by reconciling all disputes amongst factions so as to unite the party as soon as possible ahead of future elections. Failure to do so will only end in regrets and total failure.
-Remember, a strong opposition gives strength and continuous growth to a democracy.
