DELTA 2023: DO NOT UNDERRATE ANYONE IN THE POLITICAL CALCULATIONS OF DELTA STATE.... Onuesoke Warns

The political atmosphere in Delta state, as the 2023 Governorship contests becomes charged, over who emerges as Governor and Chief Executive Officer among the various contestants, has become an issue of interest to stakeholders and observers alike. 

However, it has become very pertinent to counsel all aspirants and contestants alike that, in the race to win support and endorsement from the electorates and the power brokers in the state, nobody should be underrated in the permutations, particularly as far as the political space in Delta state is concerned. 

This was the wise and princely counsel from Chief Sunny Onuesoke, a one-time gubernatorial aspirant and chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP while fielding questions from journalists at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja on Friday. 

According to Onuesoke, “anyone who seeks to underrate anybody would be surprised at the outcome of such a foolhardy enterprise as it would come at a huge political cost”.

“Politics in Delta state requires any aspiring political office holder or seeker to endeavor to engage all stakeholders, community and religious leaders, women and youth groups as this is one carrying everyone along in the project”, he said. 

"Many would be politicians have assumed an all knowing stance in their quest to seek political office and this had cost them dearly at the early stages of their political careers thereby, putting at crossroads with the electorates. Some have also failed to seek counsel from those with the proper understanding of the people as it becomes very costly to underrate anyone, especially in the politics of Delta state”.

Onuesoke, who is also an environmental expert, stressed that, “politics in Delta state is broad based, all-encompassing and therefore, requires for any politician to have a grounded and well-cultured understanding of how things work”.

“It is very unfortunate that some persons have this very poor perception that, having made some millions and a few reach-outs is all that is necessary to ascend to political office, particularly, the exalted seat of Governor of the State. This is a very poor perception which must be avoided at all cost. There are political considerations and permutations that are in place here in Delta state that cannot be ignored and one of them is, “do not underrate anyone in the political calculations as, there are persons that should not be under rated”, Onuesoke pointed out.

He opined that Delta state is deserving of the best hands to pilot its affairs come 2023, from the array of contenders, especially as it has to do with Delta Central Senatorial District that is aiming to produce a successor to Dr. Arthur Ifeanyi Okowa, the incumbent governor when his tenure expires in 2023.

He expressed confidence in some of the names being touted in the state as aspirants but advised that those who are genuinely seeking for the position of governor, must do the needful by coming out to canvass support from the electorates even as he noted that the recent passing of the Bill by the National Assembly for Direct Primaries to be adopted for future elections, would now mean that the people now hold the longer end of the stick, in who becomes their representatives.

Tasked to throw more light on the issue of Direct Primaries, Onuesoke stressed that his position on ‘Direct Primaries’ does not in any way imply that it is the same line being adopted by his political party but exercised confidence in the PDP doing the needful and adopting a position that would be suitable for its members
