DEATH OF 24YRS PAUL OBUKOHWO: ACTIVIST CALLS FOR INVESTIGATION

CP Olufemi Abaniwonda
Commissioner of Police
Delta State Command

"The Police must provide an explanation for the offense the deceased allegedly committed, which led to his detention when he went there to bail out his friend, Prosper." Comrade Agberen.

.... The Delta State Police Command should conduct a prompt investigation into this matter to ensure justice is served.

Human right activist, Comrade (Amb.) Derrick Oritsematosan Agberen today urged the Delta State Police Command led by CP Olufemi Abaniwonda to thoroughly investigate the tragic incident that led to the death of twenty four (24) years old upcoming artist, Paul Obukohwo allegedly by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, RRS Asaba.

Comrade Agberen insisted that the Police investigate and bring the erring officers to book, if indicted.

Comrade Agberen made the call in a statement sent to Our Correspondent in Warri.

He stated that the Police must provide an explanation for the offense the deceased allegedly committed, which led to his detention when he went there to bail out his friend, Prosper.

Comrade Agberen stated that the police must conduct an autopsy to determine the actual cause of death, with the presence of the deceased family's doctor and lawyer to prevent suspicion of foul play by the victim's family and members of the Civil Society, as it was suspected that the deceased was tortured and died as a result. Also, the Police must also explain why the operatives allegedly abandoned the remains of the deceased at FMC and fled the scene.

This is unacceptable in the eyes of both the public and the law, as well as within the human rights community. At a time when we are advocating against extrajudicial killings, extortion, intimidation, oppression, harassment, and all forms of unlawful arrests, another citizen has lost their life.

"CP Abaniwonda, you must try your best possible to unravel the truth. The notion that the deceased fell ill and was rushed to the hospital for treatment is suspected to be a blatant falsehood, as evidence suggests that the deceased voluntarily visited the command to inquire about his friend's arrest and potentially post bail, only to end up in police custody, from where he was subsequently rushed to the hospital." Comrade Agberen stated

The Police should be able to provide the public with accurate information to foster confidence and trust in the civil space. However, the Delta State Police Command should conduct a prompt investigation into this matter to ensure justice is served.
