2025 WORLD TOILET DAY: IFRC Commits To Support Cholera -Free Nigeria

"We will continue supporting multisectoral collaboration, evidence-based planning through hotspot mapping, community engagement, and investments that lead us to a cholera-free Nigeria". IFRC 

The Global Task Force on Cholera Control Country Support Platform and the Red Cross, GTFCCC has expressed its strong support to the commemoration of the World Toilet Day, an annual event globally celebrated in November.

GTFCCC Regional Coordinator, Global Task Force for Cholera Control Country Support, IFRC, Dr. Stephen O. Ohize made this known on Thursday 27 November 2025 at the Orange Market, Mararaba, to mark the World Toilet Day 2025.

"The GTFCC, with more than 65 global partners, including governments (Nigeria inclusive), development partners, donors, and regional organisations, works to galvanize support, provide guidelines and ultimately advance the goal of the global roadmap to end cholera and, by extension, other waterborne diseases." Ohize revealed.

"Safe, dignified, and adequate sanitation is one of our most effective tools against cholera. This is well reflected in the National Strategic Plan of Action on Cholera Control (NSPACC), launched earlier this year by the FMoH, FMEnv, and FMoWRS. Public toilets are not just a project; they are a powerful tool to protect health, support business, and uphold human dignity – especially for women, girls, the elderly, and people living with disabilities.

"Therefore, we commend the FMEnv, the Nasarawa State Government, and the leadership of Orange Market for this initiative. This symbolises what can be achieved when government, communities, private investors, and development partners collaborate for public health and human dignity." Dr. Ohize stated.

The Regional Coordinator of the GTFCCC pledged; "Our pledge today is this: we will continue supporting multisectoral collaboration, evidence-based planning through hotspot mapping, community engagement, and investments that lead us to a cholera-free Nigeria".
