Livestock Ministry Aligns Policies with National Plan

The Honourable Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, has reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to aligning its policies, programmes, and projects with the Medium-Term National Development Plan (MTNDP) 2026–2030 to accelerate growth in Nigeria’s livestock sector.

The Minister stated this at a three-day Top Management Retreat on the MTNDP 2026–2030, held in Abuja from Monday, 5th - Wednesday, 7th January 2026.

Maiha assured that all interventions of the Ministry would be strategically coordinated and fully integrated into the new national development framework. He urged participants to clearly identify key drivers of livestock development, including breed improvement, peacebuilding, feed development, and disease management, noting that peace remains fundamental to sustainable national development.

“Once we have peace, we can achieve stability and progress. Peace is central and must be treated as a national policy priority,” the Minister said.

In her remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Chinyere Ijeoma Akujobi, said the retreat was designed to enable staff to critically assess the MTNDP framework, define the roles of the Ministry and its parastatals, and ensure that proposed interventions are results-driven, measurable, and aligned with national priorities.

She explained that the retreat would focus on aligning sectoral priorities with the MTNDP pillars and results framework, harmonising programmes across departments and parastatals to eliminate duplication, translating the National Livestock Growth Acceleration Strategy (NL-GAS) into actionable and costed inputs, and strengthening implementation, monitoring, and reporting mechanisms.

According to her, NL-GAS is a 10-year roadmap developed to transform the livestock sector into a modern, market-oriented, climate-resilient, and conflict-sensitive industry capable of contributing significantly to food security and economic growth.

Participants at the retreat included representatives of the Federal Ministry of Budget and National Planning, directors, heads of parastatals and agencies under the Ministry, and Senior Special Assistants to the Honourable Minister.
