KARONMAJIJI COMMUNITY FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES AGOG AS THE LEPROSY MISSION NIGERIA, IDEAL DENTAL CARE FOUNDATION CONDUCTS MEDICAL OUTREACH FOR RESIDENTS

As part of activities marking the World Dental Day, one of the leading health non-governmental organization; The Leprosy Mission Nigeria, in conjunction with the Ideal Dental Care Foundation undertook a community medical outreach exercise to the Karonmajiji community where Persons Living With Disabilities reside; basically the largest of such in Nigeria, to provide them with basic healthcare such as medical health checks and dentistry.

Speaking with David Aire, the FCT State Program Officer of The Leprosy Mission Nigeria, he revealed that his organization, as part of their mission policy, visits the Karomajiji community for people with disabilities basically on a medical outreach; quarterly.

 

“Today, we are here in collaboration with the Ideal Dental Foundation; an NGO that offers Dental Services for people affected with disability, and we were very excited to do that. While we are focusing on medical and dermatological care, they are focusing on the dental aspects of the outreach. And as you can see, it is a crowd of persons with disabilities. For your information, this is the largest community of persons with disabilities in the country.

 

“The Leprosy Mission of Nigeria, TLMN is doing its best to see that these persons of persons are provided with basic healthcare, to enable them live a healthy life, to the best of its abilities,” Aire stated.   

The Ideal Dental Care Foundation International Lead at the event, Dr. Wisdom Okereke Obumneme, (Dental Care Services) while responding to questions, disclosed that the Foundation was in KaroMajiji for our community health-based intervention. 

 

According to the Head of the Dental Care Services of the Ideal Dental Care Foundation International, “Oral health is something that people do not really take serious enough, noting that, the Foundation, observed that most people; especially in communities such as this, cannot afford the entire treatment and therefore, decided to bring oral health to their door steps, due to the financial constraints and, a lack of awareness. This informed the decision of the Ideal Dental Care Foundation International, to visit the Karonmajiji Community for Persons With Disabilities.”

 

“The Ideal Dental Care Foundation International started since 2017, undertaking visits to across the country creating the needed health sensitization and awareness, particularly as it concerns Dental care for all.”

 

Speaking about his observations as it concerns the dental challenges of the residents of the Karonmajiji Community for Persons With Disabilities, Dr. Okereke pointed out that “many of the persons attended to, had serious calculus load in their mouths which has also resulted to loss of tooth/teeth and as a result, can lead to social withdrawal”. 

 

“With tooth problem, you will realize that you will not be able to function normally, and that is how it also relates to mental health and to the overall well-being. However, the Ideal Dental Care Foundation International does not stop with such medical outreaches and visitations but also, refers patients to its state-of-the-art facility located at Baze University in Abuja for further treatments and replacements, where and when necessary,” Dr. Okereke Obumneme revealed.
