TCN Achieves Record Grid Stability, Expands Transmission Capacity

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has recorded significant improvements in the nation’s power transmission network, including a new peak power transmission and extended grid stability.
A document obtained by naijnewsalert.ng, revealed that the company successfully transmitted an all-time peak generation of 5,801.84 megawatts, with a maximum daily energy of 128,370.75 megawatt-hours recorded on March 4, 2025, the highest so far in Nigeria’s power sector.
It also disclosed that the Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) achieved 421 days of grid stability between July 20, 2022 and September 13, 2023, while grid disturbances dropped by 76.47 percent.
Between January and August 2025, the national grid recorded two disturbances without any collapse.
According to the document, TCN’s transmission capacity currently stands at 8,500 megawatts, with the company focusing on the rehabilitation of substations and reconductoring of old transmission lines to improve stability and efficiency across the national grid.
The document further revealed that 82 power transformers were commissioned nationwide between January 2024 and November 2025, adding 8,500.50MVA capacity to the national grid.
For the first time in the company’s history, 15 units of 300MVA power transformers were installed in Akangba, Lekki, Alagbon, Ikeja West, Osogbo, Ganmo, Jos, Gombe, Kumbotso, Asaba, Oke-Aro, Benin, Alaoji, Katampe and Osogbo substations in the second half of 2025.
Prior to the installations, the highest capacity transformer in the grid was 150MVA.
According to the document, the company also completed several transmission projects including the Kaduna–Jos 330kV double circuit line, the Oke-Eletu 132/33kV line, a one-cycle transposition of the Makurdi–Aliade–Ugwuaji 330kV line, and the reconstruction of the Ikorodu–Shagamu 132kV line.
Older transmission lines such as the Delta–Effurun, Sokoto–Birnin Kebbi, and Ikeja West–Alimosho–Ogba–Alausa lines were also reconductored to increase their capacity.
The document noted that TCN is implementing several donor-funded projects worth $1.16 billion through support from development partners including the World Bank, African Development Bank, Japan International Cooperation Agency and Agence Française de Développement.
Among the projects is the construction of five new substations and a 330kV transmission line through Lafia under the Abuja Feeding Scheme, aimed at strengthening transmission capacity in the Federal Capital Territory.
The document also disclosed that the Ogun–Lagos Transmission Project, which will deliver six new substations and associated transmission lines along the Lagos–Ogun industrial corridor, will commence once compensation processes are completed.
TCN explained that it was established following the Electric Power Sector Reform Act of 2005, which unbundled the former Power Holding Company of Nigeria into 18 successor companies comprising six generation companies, 11 distribution companies and one transmission company.
The company operates as a government-owned regulated monopoly under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Power, with exclusive responsibility for transmitting electricity across states and international borders.
Under the Electricity Act 2023, system and market operations were separated from TCN and transferred to the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) to enhance transparency and efficiency in the electricity market.
