Nigerian workers, in celebration of Workers Day, an annual event celebrated on May 1, have been commended for their resilience, dedication to nation building.

Giving this commendation is the Director General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, as he joined millions of Nigerians in celebrating workers across the country.

Issa-Onilu, in his May Day message signed by Paul Odenyi, Deputy Director Press and Public Communication of the agency, described Nigerian workers as the backbone of national development and key drivers of the nation’s progress.

According to the DG NOA, "the occasion provides a valuable opportunity to reflect on the dignity of labour and the essential role workers play in nation-building, noting that their daily sacrifices continue to sustain the Nigerian economy."

He commended the resilience, dedication, and unwavering commitment of workers in both the public and private sectors, stressing that their contributions remain central to national growth despite prevailing economic and social challenges.

"Nigeria is currently at a critical stage of its development journey, where achieving sustainable prosperity requires increased productivity, discipline, and a renewed commitment to excellence from all citizens." The DG NOA stated.

Issa-Onilu also called on Nigerian workers to rededicate themselves to values such as hard work, integrity, and professionalism, emphasising that these principles are not only vital for individual success but also for collective national advancement.

He also reaffirmed the position of the Agency that true national transformation begins with a positive change in mindset, urging citizens to embrace a culture that rewards diligence, innovation, and accountability.

The DG further encouraged Nigerians to reject all forms of indolence, corruption, and inefficiency, which he said continue to hinder development and slow down national progress across key sectors.

He expressed optimism about the country’s future, noting that the government’s commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda is also reflected in ongoing efforts to improve welfare, strengthen institutions, and create a more conducive environment for productivity.

Onilu concluded by urging workers to remain steadfast, patriotic, and committed to building a Nigeria where labour is respected, opportunities are expanded, and prosperity is shared.
