FG Deploys Coastal Road Guards to Protect Tinubu Highway from Vandalism

The Federal Government has launched a specialised security initiative to protect the multi-billion-naira President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Coastal Highway from vandalism, theft and other criminal activities.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Federal Ministry of Works, involves the deployment of 40 newly trained Coastal Road Guards (CRGs) to provide round-the-clock surveillance along the Lagos-Calabar coastal corridor.

Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, disclosed the development while briefing journalists in Abuja, describing the 750-kilometre highway as one of Nigeria's most ambitious infrastructure projects. He noted that the road, which includes a 25-metre-wide rail corridor at its median, has been officially named the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Coastal Highway in recognition of the President's long-standing vision for the project.

Umahi explained that the decision to name the highway after President Tinubu was taken in consultation with the ministry's leadership and staff, stressing that the President conceived the idea nearly three decades ago while serving as Governor of Lagos State and has now brought the vision to reality.

"The project is a beauty to behold. It reflects a dream conceived many years ago and now being actualised under President Tinubu's leadership," the minister said.

Speaking during the inauguration of the road guards in Lagos, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Mr. Olufemi Dare, said the personnel were carefully screened and trained for the assignment.

He revealed that the guards would be equipped with motorcycles fitted with tracking devices to ensure effective monitoring and accountability while carrying out their duties.

According to Dare, the initiative became necessary following repeated incidents of vandalism and theft of newly installed road infrastructure, including manhole covers, directional signs and other public assets, which have imposed significant replacement costs on the government.

He expressed confidence that the deployment of the guards would curb such incidents, safeguard the strategic infrastructure and ensure the long-term sustainability of the landmark coastal highway project.

The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is one of the flagship infrastructure projects of the Tinubu administration, designed to boost connectivity, stimulate economic activities and enhance transportation along Nigeria's coastline.
