News: BRITISH COUNCIL PARTNERS VIDEOS WAVES INTERNL ON PEACE CONFLICT AND RESOULTION

The British Council, in an effort to secure Peace and Conflict Resolution amongst youths in Nigeria, especially in Northern Nigeria, has gone into partnership with one of the foremost movie production outfits in the Northwest axis of the region; Video Waves production International.

The purpose of the collaboration is to seek ways possible in using movies as a way of sensitizing youths on the advantages of peaceful cohabitation, tolerance and conflict resolution amongst others, as a tool for development.

According to the convener of the One Month training and workshop, Mr. Livinus Oteh (DGN), CEO/MD of Video Waves International, peace has become one of the most expensive commodity in every nation and, using acting to push the need for peace, was one of the major reasons behind the partnership with British Council coming as a sponsor for this workshop.

In his opening address during the opening ceremony of the Workshop, Mr. Livinus Oteh (DGN) noted that the Workshop with the Theme: “Acting Together Project” (GYARA KAYANKA) is a project created by Video Waves International and sponsored by British Council and meant to “Support Communities across the Northern Nigeria and the Niger Delta to promote dialogue and manage conflict through creative engagement process”.

“GYARA KAYANKA” is a programme that involves advocacy, calling cards, participatory research, workshops, rehearsals and performance, runs from 1^st – 30^th July, 2016”.

“Focus will be on finding out the major causes of conflicts in the Makera/Kakuri area of Kaduna South Local Government Council and our “communication objective is peace” while also directing attention on how to deal  with unemployment as this has always been a major contributing factor that generates conflict and social disharmony amongst youths”, the statement reads.

Also speaking at the event, Mr. Eric John, a Conflict Resolution Expert noted that; “the more we sweat in peace, the less we sweat in war”.

“Peace”, according to Eric John, “is a global issue that borders on conflict especially amongst youths in our society”.

“Unemployment, ethnicity and lack of conflict resolution management skills have inordinately been responsible for some of the conflicts that have occurred in the state, over the years”.

Tasked on what could have been responsible for youths becoming fodder for crisis especially during electoral times, Mr. Eric John hinged the blame on unemployment and poor educational opportunities that abound, noting that unemployed youths are easily attracted into thuggery and acts of violence by the political elites to actualize their political aspirations and ambitions.

The representative of the National Directorate of Employment, NDE Mr. Sani Maiwada reaffirmed the need for youths to embrace the opportunities offered to them by the NDE.

According to Sani Maiwada, “the youths should endeavour to change their attitude”.

He restated the position of the NDE to assist youths desirous of acquiring “skills acquisition” is part of the mandate of the agency which is to create job opportunities through self-actualization.

Tasked on the possibility of the “GYARA KAYANKA PROJECT” going round the 23LGs of the state, Livinus Oteh (DGN) expressed his strong desire to push further into the nook and crannies of the state but for lack of adequate finances, is limiting the project to select areas but with equal determination to seek for its fruitfulness and success.
