ISLAMIC MOVEMENT OF NIGERIA PROTEST IN KADUNA

There was temporary tension in Kaduna Thursday as members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, IMN otherwise known as the Shi’ites took to the streets in the state capital to protest the continued incarceration of their leader, Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky and his wife.

Ibrahim el-Zakzaky had been in detention since 2015 following the confrontation his sect members had had with a convoy of the Nigerian Army Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Yusuf Tukur Buratai which resulted in the arrest and subsequent detention of the IMN leader and his wife, including some other members of the sect.

The IMN members had after the protest, converged on Kano road, a busy section of the metropolis where they were addressed by one of their leaders, Sheikh Qassim Umar.

Sheikh Umar, while addressing the members, called on the Acting President, Yemi Osibanjo to set a good example by obeying the Court order in his position as a Professor of Law and a Senior Advocate for that matter.

Although the police, who stormed the venue where the protesters had gathered, dispersed the crowd of protesters around 10am the group could not prevent the leaders from addressing the crowd numbering several hundreds who were all dressed in black as usual, with their posters calling for the release of their leader.

The posters had the inscriptions “Free Zakzaky”.
