The calls for a more proactive measure which will provide for a lasting solution to the persistent and increasing cases of attacks by Fulani herdsmen in Nigeria, is taking up national discourse in the polity.

This has become necessary as the attacks on communities have assumed a frightening dimension and there are palpable fears of it escalating as these communities might be compelled to either take the laws into their hands through reprisals attacks or, in self defense.

The issue of the Fulani attacks has become so worrisome following the lingering and reported cases of rape which have accompanied the killings by herdsmen in Nigeria.

And to find lasting solutions to this menace, the umbrella body of Christians in Nigeria; the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN (South-south Chapter), and the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, (PFN) recently held a meeting in Warri, Delta state.

While the issue of herdsmen and that of Boko Haram attacks in Nigeria has been on for some time even the advent of this administration led by Muhammadu Buhari, Nigerians are obviously holding him to his campaign promises in 2014-2015 where he promised that he was going to put any form of killings in the country, especially the issue of Boko Haram, to an end.

Delivering his speech at the meeting, the National Vice President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, PFN Bishop Simeon Okah, while delivering a speech at the meeting said;

“Number one issue is that of Fulani herdsmen in our bushes. We are no longer going to fold our hands and watch while they kill our people. Some governors are saying they are not from the North. That claim is an insult to us”.

“Today, our children are now being deported from America and here we have people from outside our country killing people and raping our daughters, mother and wives. Our farmers no longer have farmlands to farm. I think it’s high time we started defending ourselves if the government cannot help us”.

"The economy is dying. When Jonathan handed over to Buhari, the exchange rate was between N170 to N190 to a dollar. Today, it is N550 to a dollar. Imagine how things had gone bad! While the church will pray, if he, Buhari, cannot save the country, let him resign for the country to move to where God wants it to be”.

At the end of deliberations, the two religious bodies (CAN and PFN) called on President Muhammadu Buhari to resign from office.

In the last two years since this administration came into existence, the economy of Nigeria has reportedly become one the worst in the world as recession has become the order of the day.

As things are today in the country, many Nigerians have not hidden their displeasure with Buhari’s administration as practically every area of the economy has been reportedly collapsed.

Under the Buhari administration, the nation’s currency has depreciated beyond comprehension, to an alarming level, making it rank among the worst in the world; recession has been unresolved since 2015, with electricity tariff increased while power supply remained as epileptic as ever, killer herdsmen attacking almost every part of the country and suicide attacks by Boko Haram elements becoming more emboldened by the day with attacks focused on military installations.

Not spared is even the educational system which invariably, is collapsing coupled with a high unemployment rate which has increased and also with many several thousands to lose their jobs in the days to come and all of these are among several issues associated with this tenure.

Nigeria, despite its once enviable position of number four in terms of cocoa production, has now dropped to the seventh position among the world’s producers of cocoa within two years of this government being in charge, behind Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana and Indonesia, with estimated production output of 230,000 metric tonnes.
