INTERVIEW: SAIDU DANSADAU CARPETS NIGERIAN POLITICAL ELITES

Senator Muhammed Saidu Dansadau is a grassroots politician of great repute and a respected one at that.
Known for his forthright and principled personality, Saidu Dansadau represented Zamfara Central Senatorial District in the Hallowed Chambers from 1999-2007, first as a member of the All Peoples Party, APP (1999-2003) and later, with the change of name to the All Nigerian Peoples Party, ANPP (2003-2007).
Senator Saidu Dansadau has continuously being in the forefront of a better Zamfara state and this has seen him critical of the administration of the government in his home state; Zamfara.
According to Senator Saidu Dansadau the time has come to appeal to persons with credibility to join him in the rescue of the state and the nation, in particular using the “National Rescue Movement” as the vehicle to actualize this change which will bring good governance to the people.

The “Kaduna Declaration” is one trending issue on the front burner of discuss. The agitations from the South-east is said to have culminated in the “Kaduna Declaration” by a group of under the umbrella of “Coalition of Northern Youths”.
How do you see this as it concerns the unity and oneness of Nigeria? What do you think can be done to bring about stability and peace in the country?
Well, as far as I am concerned, I think that we are been blind as Nigerians. We are just being blind and we are not seeing the right things. In fact, we are only looking for scapegoats.
The agitators for Biafra or actions by northern youths, is nothing manifestations of bad governance.
Nigerian elites, especially politicians should be honest to their selves and do the right thing and address the issue of bad governance. You know, when people are unemployed; when people don’t have anything to do, psychologists know very well that once a human being is idle, a human being is not supposed to be idle as he must have something to do. So, you either engage him positively or, he will engage himself, negatively.
Therefore, these agitations and counter agitations are nothing but as a result of unemployment. Nigerians must find something doing. One thing which we have not realized is that there are a lot of proliferation of NGO’s, organisations, Unions and everything, are not good development for this country, because if you are not careful, all these tiny organisations that are springing up everywhere, which are as a result of idleness, may end up becoming militia groups.
So, the earlier Nigerian elites and in particular political elites focus their attention on the issue of entrenching good governance in the country, only God knows where we are going to end.
And, that’s why NRM is coming to rescue the situation, to address the issue of good governance.
If there is good governance, you will see that you have everybody satisfied and happy. Everybody in this country knows that 1996, 1997 and 1999, OPC was the most notorious group or what do we call it. And, Lagos was the most vulnerable as far as insecurity was concerned but because of good governance between 1999-date, where is OPC today? They have been engaged by the government of Lagos state and to some extent, some of the South-west states. You cannot find any notorious causing mayhem to residents and visitors to the state in the Southwest.
So, these are the issues. If each and every state in this country from 1999-date have been like Lagos state, then there won’t be any of these agitations for Biafra and the counter and the ultimatum for the Igbos to leave the north. So, all these elites making case for those are agitating for Biafra and also for Igbos to leave, are just looking for scapegoats. Let’s address the critical issue; the political issue.
Nigerian politicians should be ashamed of themselves. And, I repeat it; “Nigerian politicians should be ashamed of themselves”. Three times I say it; “we must be ashamed of ourselves” that we have misgoverned this country to the extent to the extent that we are having this kind of agitations and the counter claims. Let us be serious and honest to ourselves and address the political issues and that is what we are out to do.
The President has been out of the country for several long spells this year alone with regards with regards to his health challenges and this is said to have impacted negatively on the budget being passed and assented to.
Could this not have been responsible for all this delay?
No! I don’t think so. The sickness of the president couldn’t have impacted or stopped anything. If, ab-initio, the government had done the right thing, involving all the stakeholders in an advocacy process, if all the stakeholders had been adequately involved, the ailment of the President wouldn’t have stopped anything but for the fact that, contrary to state of situation, that is why we have vacuum.
Sir, what is your reaction to the 2017 Budget that has just being passed into law?
The 2017 budget that has just been assented to by the Acting President, now in June, six months into the year; half of the year is gone.
For me, it is disappointing that it is now that the 2017 budget is passed into law.
One could only appeal to the National Assembly to be more alive to their responsibility. They should remember that they swore to an oath of office that they will do their work diligently.
Passing a budget at this point in time when half of the year is already gone, it does not portray the National Assembly in a good light.
So, I think elected public officers, in fact, appointed public officers should remember God; they should fear God.
For me, I am not impressed. I feel that it is disappointing that it is only at this time that the 2017 Budget is being assented to. It does not portray Nigeria in a very good light in the eyes of the International community. How do we expect foreign investors to be interested in coming to Nigeria if we can only pass our Budget and assent it into law at the middle of the year?
So, we should be more alive to our responsibility.
Is the blame for the delay only on the National Assembly or does the Executive share also in the blame, Sir?
The blame is on both the National Assembly and the Executive. It is the expectations of government to submit its Budget proposals by the 2nd of October in every year so that the NASS should use 3 months so that, by the 30th or 31st of December, Mr. President assents to it. There is nothing wrong in that.
So, both the executive arm of government and the NASS must be alive to their responsibility. People should fear God and do the right things. It is very disappointing. If we ensure that we entrench democracy against military regime and we can remember with nostalgia, during the military regime, you always had your budget passed in time into law by the end of the preceding year and by January, the new budget is being implemented.
How can you tell Nigerians and the international community that democracy is better than military regime? We have failed. The Nigerian politician has failed as far as democracy is concerned. It should be a shame on us as Nigerian politicians.
Sir, the budget is predicated on borrowing. What does this portend for the country itself, especially the economical wellbeing of the country?
There is nothing wrong in that as even the United States of America in most cases predicates its budget on borrowing. There is nothing wrong about borrowing but what is important is adequate planning. You plan what you will do with the money you are borrowing. You also execute the budget diligently, faithfully and honestly in the interest of the good people of your country.
This is where the crux of the matter lies. You should do the right thing. Even when you pass and assent it into law in June, what kind of implementation do you expect? There should be adequate planning so that the right thing is done is done at the right time, for the right people. It is not that you budget money and the chunk of the money is stolen by public officers.
So, do the right plan, do the right thing for the right people and the good people of Nigeria. Not for a negligible few who have privileges and opportunities to be at the helm of affairs and they defraud public funds.
Still on the issue of budgetary and appropriations, the Presidency has stated that the preparations for 2018 Budget would commence immediately.
Do you see any cheering news there; is it positive news?
If it were matched with actions, yes. It is a positive step but how many times have we been hearing about budget will be started in earnest and that by December, that budget will be implemented. How many times have you heard about that? It is always been there for a very long time.
It will be a good development if the words will be matched with actions.
There are new political parties emerging in the country today. How do you see their emergence which is said to be posing a threat to the APC and the PDP?
In fact, the truth of it is that, the “National Rescue Movement”, we are at the last stage of our registration process.
The PDP has become a disaster for the country; governing the country for good 16yrs and there is nothing to show for it. And, during their 16yrs, the revenue that accrued to the country, we have never had such in the political history of this country and then, there is nothing to show for it.
And, the APC that was able to uproot the ruling PDP; there were a lot of expectations on it but it has become a gross disappointment.
So therefore, if APC became a gross disappointment, the only alternative is for new political parties to spring up, which is why we have a significant departure from the tradition of PDP and that of APC. And, that is what our own proposed political is set out to do. We are out to rescue the rescue the country from all the socio-economic problems that have bedeviled the country for so long.
Who are the founding fathers and backers of the National Rescue Movement?
I am the Protem National Chairman of the Movement and patriotic Nigerians who believe and see political power as a means of helping people, are the ones who are behind this party.
What is the guarantee that the National Rescue Movement would not be hijacked by money-bags?
No! Why money-bags hijack political parties is because, use of money has been the prime force of moving those political parties. The National Rescue Movement has its antecedents of individuals; they are committed to service to their people. Their patriotism is the driving force. You don’t have to have money to have the ticket of the National Rescue Movement. Even if you are a multi-billionaire, you cannot have the ticket of the NRM if you are not accepted by your people.
If you don’t have a good track record of patriotism or service to humanity, you cannot have your way. Our own is a certified project; it is a self help political party that is where all members are equal with those who will form the party and our own founding fathers of the party. That is why, ab-initio, leaders of this party do not need to ask for money for transport if you are coming to our meetings in Abuja.
We don’t provide accommodation to anybody. Even if it is from the wards to local governments or to the state or national, nobody is going to give you any transport money or accommodation.
So, if you know that you can make this kind of sacrifice for the country, then you can be part of the leadership of this party. These are parts of the steps that we are taking to substantially curtail the use of money in the party.
Sir, from the way you have outlined the guidelines of the NRM, there seems to be many challenges that have bedeviled this nation.
We have issues of corruption, insecurity and many more. What are the plans put in place by the NRM to curb and address these challenges so as to bring the country back to a stable level?
What we have planned, the way we ran the political party, is the solid foundation for addressing these vices that have bedeviled the country for so long. Let me give you an example; you know Nigerians have this penchant for what you all “African time”.
Since we started this party, if we call for a meeting and we say the meeting is 2pm, once it is 2pm, we start off. We have told them that we cannot set out to rescue the country from the vices that have bedeviled for so long and then, we don’t give good examples. The counsel was greatly accepted and that has been the style ever since. Punctuality and Promptness! This is the way and manner we are going to address those vices through “leadership by example”.
Political parties in Nigeria are used to taking monies from candidates. Somebody has won an election; that is acceptable by his constituency and somebody will sit in Abuja, nullify the election and give it to the highest bidder who has given him money. So, through transparent running of our party; the way we clear our candidates, the way we run our campaign, the way we manage our party, is the strong foundation we are putting to rescuing the country from all of this.
What is the geographical spread of the NRM? Is it just a regional party or does it have a national outlook?
Oh yes!! We have membership across the country. There are so many patriotic Nigerians in this country who are interested in rendering service to the people and the common man who has been on the receiving end for so many years, have learnt from a very hard way.
So, it is now left to the common man up there; they know the credible Nigerians. They know credible people in their domain and they also know the crooks and they also know those who are only interested in staling public funds and money.
Therefore, when we unveil our ideologies and principles, when we unveil what we stand for and what we have set out to do, you will see people rushing in to join us. As I am talking to you, our interim office is full of people from different parts of the country showing their willingness and support.
The day we are announced as cleared by INEC, you will see wonders. You will see the kind of unprecedented crowd of people that will come and show their solidarity with this party.
So, we are waiting and by the grace of God, the time has come when Nigeria will be rescued so that the type of those who use political office as means of making money are sent packing.
Let us talk about your state; Zamfara. What is your assessment of the performance of your state governor as it relates to capital and human development?
Look, human resource development is key. Human resource development in Zamfara state, in fact, is minus zero. It is minus zero. The performance of the governor is very poor. Terribly poor! Have you forgotten the number of youths that have been killed within the last 6years of the present administration? If a government cannot secure the lives and properties of its people, then what kind of government is that? Look at that. And, that is why the people of the state are interested in entrenching government of credible people who will, by the Grace of God, will put concrete foundation for good governance in the state.
The way Zamfara state has become a laughing stock in the eyes of its peer states, by the grace of God within the next few years, will become a model state so long as we get the kind of cooperation that we are looking for, from the people of the state, we are going to entrench a model government fro good governance that other states can emulate. We will be second to Lagos. Zamfara state will be second to Lagos state as far as good governance is concerned.
Sir, when you talk about good governance and developing the state, vis-à-vis; comparing it to Lagos state, what are the resources you are capitalizing upon to achieve this?
The resources are there. Zamfara state, if you are to categorize the nation; the 36 states and the FCT, in terms of resources, Zamfara state belongs to the first 9 richest states in Nigeria. But, because it does not have good governance; leaders that will know how to tap into the resources, get use of its human resources, the citizens and through prudent management, tailoring the resources of the state to human capital development for the development of the economy, that is responsible for the poor poverty state of the people living in the state.
The people of Zamfara state are in different strata of the society and also, from different cadres of the economy, are working hard in order to prepare a good blue print that is going to guide any government that is coming in, because we have already seen that Zamfara state has become a laughing stock.
Anywhere a citizen of Zamfara state goes, he is laughed at, because of the poor situation of the state. And, that’s how all hands are on deck to salvage the state.
In closing, what has been the efforts of leaders like you, to assuage the minds of people from the Southeast region; the Igbos not to panic?
Look, if you have been conversant with the trend of things, with the current issues, you will find that you don’t have to ask me this question. I have been up and doing, regarding calling the government to order.
I have not minced my words, I have not missed my steps and I have taken all necessary steps that I need to take in order to make the government of the day do the right thing.
But, Zamfara state government has developed thick skin, deaf ears and blind eyesight to anything that is right. And, that is why we said that this kind of thing is not going to happen again.
We are going to do the right thing by identifying credible people who are going to lead the state. We are having the support of the majority of the people of Zamfara state because, everybody is sick tired.

Anywhere a citizen of Zamfara state goes, he is laughed at, because of the poor situation of the state. And, that’s how all hands are on deck to salvage the state.
In closing, what has been the efforts of leaders like you, to assuage the minds of people from the Southeast region; the Igbos not to panic?
Look, if you have been conversant with the trend of things, with the current issues, you will find that you don’t have to ask me this question. I have been up and doing, regarding calling the government to order.
I have not minced my words, I have not missed my steps and I have taken all necessary steps that I need to take in order to make the government of the day do the right thing.
But, Zamfara state government has developed thick skin, deaf ears and blind eyesight to anything that is right. And, that is why we said that this kind of thing is not going to happen again.
We are going to do the right thing by identifying credible people who are going to lead the state. We are having the support of the majority of the people of Zamfara state because, everybody is sick tired.
