Unfortunate: Three Teenagers Buried Alive in Kaduna

Rigasa, a community in Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State has always been in the news for one worrisome news or happening.


The community has again come into the news as three (3) teenagers, ages between 12-16, were reportedly buried alive on Wednesday, 20th December, at about 3:30pm while scavenging at a construction site in the locality.

Following the incident, the entire community has been thrown into deep mourning.

According to sources in Rigasa, the unfortunate incident occurred when sand from a building site caved in and killed three teenagers, leaving the other two injured.

Speaking with Naij News Alert, the sources revealed that the five children were trying to dig a hole to remove an iron buried beneath the earth at the construction site when the unfortunate incident happened.

The source disclosed that all efforts to rescue the victims who were buried in the sand ended in futility.

Two of the children died on the spot, while the third died few hours later after their rescue. The remaining two others were rescued successfully and taken to the hospital for treatment.

Confirming the unfortunate  to newsmen, the Chief Imam of Kalshen Kwalta Juma’at Mosque, Malam Jamilu, said he performed the funeral on the victims.

He described the tragic incident as very sad, saying one of the victims, Zahradeen a 16-year-old, ‎was the son of his neighbour.

"Yes, the victims were three in number and they were of 12-16 years of age. One of the victims is the son of my neighbour. He is called Zahradeen. I performed their funeral prayers".

"They went to a construction site where the state government is constructing a bridge, digging to remove irons beneath the earth just like the local miners ‎are doing when the sand fell on them and buried them alive", Ma'am Jamilu said.

Sources revealed that the presence of a passerby who saw the incident take place and raised the alarm, was the saving grace of the two survivors.

Efforts to rescue them failed because, there was no equipment to dig up the sand immediately, the sources stated as elders in the community have warned youths to stay clear of construction sites in search of whatever for their own safety.

One of the youth leaders who spoke under the condition of anonymity, said the youths were only searching for scraps to survive as there is so much poverty in the country even as he called on leaders to be more engaging in providing employment opportunities for the people.
