Following
the shooting of Mr. Joseph Pessu by military personnel on Thursday, 02 March
2020 at Ada Val Street, Ugbuwangue, Warri, the lawmaker representing Warri
South II, State Constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly, DTHA, Hon.
Matthew Poko Opuoru, has condemned the unfortunate incident.
The
legislator made his position known in a statement signed by his media aide, Mr.
L O. Memuduaghan as he condemned the gruesome murder of Mr. Joseph Pessu by an unidentified
military personnel on detail to ensure compliance of the lockdown and restriction
of movement as ordered by the delta state government.
The
lockdown and subsequent restriction became necessary following the emergence of
the Corona Virus Pandemic, otherwise called COVID-19.
Fielding
questions from newsmen in Warri, Hon. Opuoro revealed that he was pained by the
news of the dastardly act of the Nigerian Soldier who deliberately shot at the defenseless
Joseph Pessu.
Opuoro
stated that the deceased happens to be a bonafide member of his Constituency
and particularly Pessu Ward and that the father of the deceased, Joseph, was
also a known leader in Pessu and a staunch member of the Peoples Democratic
Party (PDP), who has also contributed immensely to the growth, stability and
development of the party in the Ward.
Hon.
Matthew Poko Opuoru, in the statement, used the opportunity to thank the state governor,
Sen. Arthur Ifeanyi Okowa in setting up a Panel of Enquiry that would investigate
and look at the remote cause of action that led to this unfortunate incident,
which led to the death of the deceased.
Governor
Okowa, it will be recalled had detailed some leaders in Warri South, to go and
condoled with the family of Mr. Monday Pessu, on the sudden event that led to
the demise of his illustrious son, Mr Joseph Pessu, in the unfortunate circumstances
that led to the incident.
Hon
Matthew Opuoru therefore admonished members of his constituency to be law abiding
and urged them to comply and adhere strictly to Governments’ directive and
orders as regards the lockdown where all citizens of the Nigerian society,
should obey and comply with the sit at home directive, consequent upon the
emergence of CoronaVirus Pandemic Pandemonium.
This
is in order to avert any type of accident/coincidence resulting from flouting
the aforementioned Government directive and its attendant consequences, he
added.
My deepest condolences to the PESSU family
