COMPLIANCE ON LOCKDOWN: TOUGHER DAYS FOR VIOLATORS…..Okowa Warns

In spite of his earlier commendation of deltans on the level of their compliance to the lockdown directives imposed on the state, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has threatened violators with stiffer penalties and consequences. 

Okowa, in a recent address to Deltans, warned that the Delta State government would henceforth, adopt tougher measures in ensuring that the enforcement of the interstate lockdown restriction order is respected and that, any vehicle violating the order, would be impounded forthwith, while operators of such vehicles, risk prosecution.

The Delta state Chief Executive while monitoring the level of the compliance order at several boundary communities between Delta and its neighbouring states over the weekend.

He directed security agents and members of the state’s Task Force at the boundaries posted to such boundaries to allow, only vehicles on essential duties and those with agricultural products into the state.

The governor visited the boundary between Delta and Anambra state (River Niger Bridge) and Alifikede, the boundary community between the state and Edo on the Benin-Asaba highway. In all, delta has thirteen boundaries across the state.

Restating the state government’s seriousness at implementing the inter-state lockdown order, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa disclosed that he was aware that people were moving from one part of the country to the other.

He therefore charged the security operatives and members of the Task Force to be vigilant in order to detect unauthorized movements and henceforth, stop them from gaining entrance into the state.

In addition, Okowa dismissed reports of an alleged influx of almajiris into the state, adding that the Task Force members have been empowered to check every vehicle coming into the state.

“We have given instructions to those manning the boundaries to ensure that every vehicle is checked and, anyone carrying more than the authorized number of passengers, especially the motor boy and the driver should be turned back”.

“Any number beyond that should be turned back and I can see that they have been doing that and I haven’t been briefed of the influx of almajiris into the state”, he stated.

Okowa reiterated the call on residents to practice physical distancing, the regular wearing of facemask, routine washing of hands with running water and soap or use alcohol-based hand sanitizer, and other precautionary measures that would keep the pandemic at bay.
