OPINION: TRANSPARENCY, PROBITY AND ACCOUNTABILITY….. By Olorogun Godwin Obire JP

The expectations of citizens for good governance were quite high when Delta State returned to the democratic system of government in 1999.

Deltans were looking forward to reaping the dividends of democracy. The narrative was that the military was delinquent, corrupt and unaccountable; and democracy would offer answers to critical matters such as unemployment, poverty, insecurity, absence of basic infrastructure, corruption etc.

Believing the unethical Delta State politicians had picked a few lessons from the catastrophe of the first, second and third republics, we entered the fourth republic full of hope in Delta State.

Fast forward 20years later and we are still searching for one key ingredient needed for development and state build quality leadership this is so sad, only the best available brain's is good enough for every office in Delta State public service.

It is true that the progress of any State all over the world rests on the stature or standard of its leadership and how they can bring this to bear on the welfare of people of the state.

No state can enjoy lasting peace if her citizens live in abject poverty particularly if that state is acknowledged as having the ability and substantial means to provide development and guarantee a good standard of living.

Unfortunately, that is the tale of Delta State. It is a tale of poor governance by past and present unethical political leaders like Ovie Omo Agege, James Manager, Peter Nwaboshi, James Ibori, Emmanuel Uduaghan, Ifeanyi OKowa and others.

Insecurity and poverty in the midst of plenty that is what Deltans faces today take it or leave it. It is nothing but the truth that is glaring to the blind and not until we are bold enough to speak the truth, look beyond money's POLITICS  by putting square peg in square holes we can never be liberated from this POLITICAL slavery.

Only the truth will set us free.
