The Executive Assistant to the Governor of Delta State on Communications, Dr Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe has appealed to Christians and Moslems in the country to intensify prayers for God/Allah to restore peace  to our nation, Nigeria, saying that the events of the past two weeks confirmed the supremacy of Citizens, and the enviable role of our gallant youths in constitutional democracy.

The EACGOVDELTA in a statement on Friday October 23, 2020 said in situations such as this, it is only the immortal God that can speedily restore normalcy because He posses  the unquestionable powers to interfere in the affairs of His people, adding that whenever men wisdom failed, God ever potent mercies and powers will never fail.

Oghenesivbe therefore enjoined Nigerians as well as spiritual leaders across board to devote quality time to pray even as we observe curfew in some States of the federation, saying that never again shall our leaders and elected representatives take the will power of the people for granted.

He totally aligned with the views of governor Okowa of Delta State, that some criminal elements hijacked the well intended and legitimate peaceful protests by engaging in arson and other heinous crimes, especially the incessant wanton destruction of property and willful looting of public and private properties in Delta State, Abuja, Lagos, Edo and elsewhere in the country.

"It is obvious that those involved in arson and looting are not #EndSars protesters, which is why our gallant and responsible youths in Delta and across the country must of a necessity assist law enforcement agents and constituted authorities to fish out the criminal elements disguising as protesters with a view to bringing them to justice.

"In Delta State, the governor Senator Dr Ifenayi Arthur Okowa, has constituted a judicial panel of enquiry to investigate cases of police brutality, extortion, unlawful arrests, human rights abuses and extra judicial killings. Genuine victims or their families shall be compensated while police officers found guilty shall be made to face the consequences of their unlawful and overzealous acts or actions.

"And very soon, the governor shall inaugurate a Special Security and Human Rights Committee to be chaired by him. This is another positive step to tackle the vexed issue of police brutality. The committee when constituted shall publish dedicated telephone lines and social media platforms to enable members of the public report incidences of police brutality, extortion, extra judicial killings and human rights abuses, etcetera.

"Furthermore, a special Victims Support Fund put in place by the state government will provide compensation for victims while at the same time monitoring and tracking police tactical units and operations, to ensure that effective policing is done in accordance with prescribed best global practices in Delta state and by extension, Nigeria. This is what Gov Okowa meant when he said 'we must right the wrong.'

"It follows that while Governor Okowa and other leaders of this nation are doing the needful to implement the demands of our youths, it is only fair that the #EndSars protesters should give peace a chance, leave the streets to enable free flow of traffic, allow citizens to go about their legitimate activities in Delta and across Nigeria.

"It is crystal clear that the voices of our youths have been heard loud and very clear. They are heroes of democracy and must do everything and anything within powers to ensure that disgruntled elements do not rubbish their worthwhile efforts in this dispensation. 

"It is time to retreat and give reasonable time to enable the police high command, state and federal governments to implement the youths demands and take positive steps to avoid future unlawful actions and inactions of law enforcement agents, going forward.

"In the same token, I respectfully appeal to Deltans to strictly observe the 48 hours curfew imposed by the state government and to also use the period to fast and pray for sustained peace in the state and absolute unity of Nigeria," Oghenesivbe said.
