YOUTHS UNREST IN EKU/ABRAKA: Okowa's EAC Calls For Peace, Resolution Of Crisis.
...Urges Delta CP Inuwa to enforce curfew, restore peace in the area.
An appeal has gone out to youths in Eku/Abraka in Ethiope East Local Government Area of the state, to eschew all sorts of violence and give useful information to law enforcement agents, so as to unravel the immediate and remote causes of extra judicial killings which occurred over the weekend in their locality.
Making this strong appeal is Dr. Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe, the Executive Assistant on Communications to Governor Arthur Ifeanyi Okowa.
The reaction of the youths that led to the restiveness in the locality, is alleged to have been triggered by cult related vices.
The EAC in a statement on Sunday said he was pained upon hearing the sad news of youth restiveness in Abraka and Eku, alleged to have a deep root in rival cult groups clashes, as can be deduced from the official statement by the Chairman of Ethiope East Local Government Council, Chief Mrs Faith Oniemo Majemite.
Oghenesivbe, in his statement, added that breach of public peace cum extra judicial killing of fellow citizens is not only a crime against the state but a sin against God, and appealed to the warring parties to shield their swords.
The EAC, who is a human rights lawyer on a pro bono basis, advised the youth to shun cultism, social vices and key into the numerous skills acquisition and vocational training programmes of this administration led by Governor Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa, pointing out that it has been proven beyond reasonable doubt that a responsible and productively engaged youth is not prone to criminal activities.
He called on the State Commissioner of Police, Mr Hafiz Inuwa as well as the Divisional Police Officers in Abraka, Isiokolo and Eku jurisdictions to be proactive and result oriented by unravelling the remote and immediate causes of the outburst of violence in the affected areas and bring the perpetrators to justice, noting that the Violence Against Persons Law, 2020 which is now in force in the state, prohibits breach of public peace, public and private violence and extra judicial killing of any citizen of the state.
Oghenesivbe commended the Chairman of Ethiope East Council, Chief Mrs Majemite, for her prompt intervention and for seeking an order from the state government to impose curfew in Abraka and Eku respectively, as a proactive first step measure to stop the violence, and to provide a conducive atmosphere for police investigations into the unfortunate incident.
"I urge our youth to give peace a chance by shielding their swords, to allow for proper investigation and necessary action by law enforcement agents".
"It is expedient for the Divisional Police Officers, DPOs in Abraka and Eku to commence thorough investigations and at the same time restore peace, law and order in the affected areas, and to enforce the curfew.
"Taking the life of another is a crime against the state which must not be ignored. Peaceful coexistence is one of the hallmarks of this administration and nobody is permitted to jeopardise the prevailing peace and tranquility In the state," the EAC added.
