Trending reports reveal the good news that the 287 staff and students from Kuriga in Chikun local government council of the state have been released by their abductors.

The announcement was made known to the public by the Kaduna State Government, Senator Una Sani, via a statement on the social media handles of the state government in the early hours of Sunday, 24 March 2024.

The abducted students and their teachers were violently taken away by unknown armed men over two weeks ago.

Part of the statement reads; “I wish to announce that our Kuriga school children have been released.

“Our special appreciation goes to our dear President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for prioritising the safety and security of Nigerians and particularly ensuring that the abducted Kuriga school children are released unharmed. While the school children were in captivity, I spoke with Mr. President several times. He shared our pains, comforted us, and worked round the clock with us to ensure the safe return of the children.”

"The governor also appreciated the courage of the officers of the Nigerian Army for seeing to the successful release of the schoolchildren.

"The Nigerian Army also deserves special commendation for showing that with courage, determination and commitment, criminal elements can be degraded and security restored in our communities.

“We also thank all Nigerians who prayed fervently for the safe return of the school children. This is indeed a day of joy. We give Almighty Allah all the glory.”

It is pertinent to state here that the abducted students, alongside some members of staff of the LEA Primary and Secondary School, Kuriga were abducted on March 7 by armed bandits and taken into captivity. While in captivity, their abductors demanded for payment of #1bn as ransom for their release while giving a deadline of March 27, 2024, for the payment of the ransom.

At the time of filing this report, it is not yet known of any ransom was paid for their release.

However, sources in Kaduna state disclosed that 138 school children and staffers were the actual number abducted and not the 287 as earlier reported by authorities and sources in the state. Sadly, one of the victims reportedly died in captivity

Reports have it that the 137 released persons have been taken to hospital by the authories for medical examination before being reconciled with their families.

In the meantime, stakeholders in the state including parents have continued to laud the Senator representing Kaduna Central Senatorial District, Malam Lawal Adamu Usman, popularly known as "Senator LA", for his doggedness and commitment towards ensuring the safe return of the students and staffers of the LEA Primary and Secondary School, Kuriga.

It is recalled that the Distinguished Senator LA had, in the wake of the abduction saga, visited Mr President to personally discuss the situation and seek a solution to the unfortunate incident. It is a huge relief to all concerned and commendations to everyone involved in ensuring the safe return of the 137 persons back to their families.
