Abuja, Nigeria- Vice President Shettima, gave this position at the 10th edition of Pan-African
Legacy Conference of the Mandela Washington Fellowship Conference held in Abuja
on Thursday.
Shettima, while speaking on the theme of the Conference, “Shaping Africa’s Future through the AfCFTA and Agenda 2063,” which aims to provide a platform for advancing the socio-economic progress of the African continent, highlighted the significant youth population in Africa, with over 60% of people being under 25, stressing on their essential role in shaping the continent’s future.
He commended the Mandela Washington Fellowship and Nigerian youth organizations for their collaborative efforts in nurturing future leaders.
Speaking at the event which held at the State House, Ambassador Richard Mills Jnr the US Ambassador to Nigeria, reiterated the commitment of the US Government to supporting young African leaders as he emphasized their role in shaping the future of the African continent.
Ambassador Mills Jnr, who was represented by his Deputy Chief of Missions,
David Greene, highlighted the significance of MWFAAN’s decade-long journey. He
celebrated the association’s accomplishments and underscored the necessity of
investing in Africa’s upcoming leaders.
President of MWFAAN, Mrs Farida Yahya in her address at the epic event,
reiterated the association’s mission to empower young African leaders to drive
sustainable development and economic prosperity across the continent.
Farida Yahya, while emphasizing on the need to foster leadership skills and promote collaborative opportunities among emerging leaders, expressed her belief in the potential of Africa’s youthful population to lead in innovation and creativity globally by 2050.
She stressed the importance of initiatives like the Mandela Washington Fellowship in equipping young leaders with the tools to succeed.
The Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders, a flagship program of the U.S. Government’s Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI), has brought together nearly 6,500 young leaders from Sub-Saharan Africa for academic and leadership training in the United States.
The highlight of the conference was the unveiling of the Ubuntu Trade App, a
digital platform enabling Mandela Washington Fellows to showcase their profiles
and engage in trade activities across Africa and with partners in the United States
of America.
Nigeria’s Vice President, Senator
Kashim Shettima has reiterated, federal government’s recognition, the role of
youth investment in national prosperity and future advancement.
Represented by his Deputy Chief of Staff, Senator Ibrahim Hadejia, Nigeria’s Vice President reiterated the importance of initiatives like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and Agenda 2063 in propelling Africa’s growth.
He commended the Mandela Washington Fellowship and Nigerian youth organizations for their collaborative efforts in nurturing future leaders.
