FG Launches 2025 Nationwide Market Surveillance .... As Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment Moves To Safeguard Consumers and Trade Integrity

Abuja- The 2025 Annual Market Surveillance Exercise by the Weights and Measures Department of the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment FMITI commenced today in the Federal Capital Territory and 36 states of the country.

The initiative, according to a statement issued and signed by Adebayo Thomas, PhD, Director, Press and Public Relations of the Ministry, "aims to enforce approved measurement standards, protect consumers from short-changing, and promote fairness in trade".

The exercise was flagged off at FMITI headquarters by Permanent Secretary Ambassador Nura Abba Rimi, represented by Mr. Dafang I. Sule, Director of Federal Produce Inspectorate Services. Inspectors immediately set out to verify equipment at key outlets—including NNPC Mega Station (Central Area), Conoil opposite NNPC Towers, Grand Square Supermarket, CNG retail sites, and the Arab Contractors weigh-bridge.

Speaking with journalists, Director of Federal Produce Inspectorate Services, Dafang I. Sule noted that, “The core objective is to ensure every weighing and measuring instrument is accurate, certified, and reflects true value for consumers”. 

He added that the Secretary to the Government of the Federation has directed renewed oversight at crude oil terminals to guarantee lifted volumes match approved figures.

Mr. Bamidele Olajide, Director of the Weights and Measures Department, confirmed that field officers are being mobilised nationwide. “Seventy per cent of our work is hands-on market and site surveillance,” he noted, underscoring ongoing collaboration with the National Assembly to strengthen the legal framework governing weights and measures.

This year’s surveillance aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda by boosting consumer confidence, enhancing market transparency and driving revenue through regulatory compliance. FMITI calls on the media and the public to champion this critical work in ensuring fairness and accountability in commercial measurement practices.

Early feedback from business operators was positive. Engineer Gamal Abdullah of Arab Contractors confirmed compliance with certification requirements, while NNPC Zone 1 Station Manager Iyiaji Isa pledged prompt upgrades at CNG outlets. FMITI emphasised that all training and certification fees are processed transparently through official government channels.
