Powering Progress: FGN Power Company Seals Strategic Deals with Ebonyi, Enugu to Fast-Track National Grid Upgrade

ABUJA- The FGN Power Company (FGNPC) has intensified efforts to accelerate Phase 1 of the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI) through renewed partnerships with the governments of Ebonyi State and Enugu State.

During high-level engagements, an FGNPC delegation led by Chief Commercial Officer, Babatunde Daramola-Oniru, met with senior state officials—including Secretaries to the State Governments and Commissioners of Energy—to strengthen collaboration and ensure smooth execution of critical power infrastructure projects.

Daramola-Oniru underscored the importance of early and sustained stakeholder engagement, noting that the long-term success of the initiative hinges on strong partnerships. He emphasized that beyond technical delivery, collaboration with state governments and host communities is key to reducing risks, fostering local ownership, and ensuring lasting impact.

In Ebonyi, priority is being placed on the construction of the Ugwaji–Okposi 330kV double-circuit transmission line, a project designed to unlock stranded capacity and improve grid stability. The development is expected to significantly enhance electricity supply to homes and businesses across the state.

Responding to the initiative, the Secretary to the Ebonyi State Government, Grace Umezurike, expressed strong support, describing the project as critical infrastructure that will power key institutions, including the state’s international airport, healthcare facilities, and schools. She assured that the state government would remove all bottlenecks to ensure timely delivery.

In Enugu, the initiative is seen as central to the state’s broader economic and urban transformation agenda. The Secretary to the State Government, Chidiebere Onyia, highlighted the alignment between FGNPC’s objectives and the administration’s vision of building a modern smart city. He stressed that a reliable power supply is fundamental to driving industrial growth and digital innovation, pledging the state’s full cooperation.
