NSITF, South Africa’s RMA Forge Strategic Alliance to Strengthen Workplace Safety, Compensation Systems

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU),  aimed at deepening cooperation in social insurance administration, occupational health and safety, employee compensation, and institutional capacity development, has been signed by the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) and South Africa’s Rand Mutual Assurance (RMA). 

The agreement was signed on Wednesday in Abuja at the conclusion of a three-day Strategic Technical Engagement and Bilateral Session hosted by NSITF at Fraser Suites.

The signing formalises a framework for collaboration between the two institutions, enabling technical exchanges, knowledge sharing, and joint efforts to strengthen workplace safety and compensation systems in Nigeria and South Africa.

The engagement brought together management and technical teams from both organisations, led by NSITF Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Barrister Oluwaseun Faleye, and RMA Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Bilal Adams.

During the three-day sessions, the delegations undertook extensive knowledge-sharing and institutional benchmarking exercises, exploring areas such as social insurance administration, occupational health and safety systems, injury prevention programmes, rehabilitation frameworks, actuarial modelling, and digital transformation initiatives.

Under the MoU, both organisations agreed to collaborate on six key areas, including technical exchanges and capacity-building programmes focused on workplace safety, rehabilitation, claims administration, actuarial services, prevention strategies, and digital innovation.

The partnership will also facilitate the exchange of technical information, research materials, and best-practice frameworks, subject to regulatory and confidentiality requirements.

To ensure effective implementation, the two institutions have agreed to establish a Joint Technical Working Group comprising representatives from relevant departments. The body will be responsible for identifying, developing, and coordinating collaborative programmes and initiatives arising from the agreement.

The MoU further provides for the joint exploration of prevention and incentive-based models that could be adapted to Nigeria’s Employees’ Compensation Scheme, while also promoting continued dialogue on technology adoption and digital transformation.

In a joint statement, both organisations reaffirmed their commitment to advancing social insurance administration, workplace safety, rehabilitation services, and employee compensation systems through sustained cooperation and knowledge exchange.

Industry stakeholders have welcomed the partnership, noting that RMA, founded in 1894, is one of Africa’s oldest and most experienced social security institutions, with a long history of administering compensation for occupational injuries and diseases.

Analysts say the collaboration offers NSITF a valuable opportunity to benchmark against a globally recognised institution as Nigeria continues efforts to strengthen its social security framework and improve protection for workers under the Employees’ Compensation Scheme.

The NSITF is the statutory agency responsible for administering Nigeria’s Employees’ Compensation Scheme under the Employees’ Compensation Act 2010 and the NSITF Act, while RMA remains a leading South African mutual assurance company specialising in occupational injury and disease compensation.
