The Federal Government on Tuesday flagged off the reconstruction of the 122-kilometre Kaduna (Mando)–Birnin Gwari Road, with the Minister of Works, David Umahi, declaring that the economic reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu are beginning to yield tangible results across the country.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony in Afaka Mando, Kaduna State, Umahi said the Tinubu administration is leveraging road infrastructure to stimulate economic growth, tackle insecurity, reduce hunger and reconnect communities under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

He described the Kaduna–Birnin Gwari Road as another fulfilled promise by President Tinubu, stressing that the project will strengthen regional connectivity, facilitate trade and shorten travel time between Northern Nigeria and Lagos by linking Birnin Gwari to Niger, Kwara, Osun, Oyo and Lagos states.

According to the Minister, strategic investments in roads are already changing the country's economic and security landscape.

"We are using road infrastructure to solve economic challenges, fight insecurity, reduce hunger and address development imbalances across the country," Umahi said.

He noted that the ongoing reconstruction of the Abuja–Kaduna Road has significantly improved security along the once-dangerous corridor, saying the era of frequent attacks on motorists has largely been brought under control.

Umahi also dismissed claims that the Federal Government is prioritising new roads while neglecting existing ones, pointing to ongoing rehabilitation works on major highways, including the Abuja–Kaduna–Zaria–Kano Road, Enugu–Onitsha Road, Makurdi–9th Mile Road, Bodo–Bonny Road and the Sokoto–Zamfara–Funtua–Zaria corridor.

Describing road infrastructure as a catalyst for national development, the minister said every completed road project boosts agriculture, commerce, education and overall economic productivity.

He also congratulated Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, on securing presidential approval for a 50-kilometre intra-city light rail project valued at 868 million dollars, describing it as a major milestone for the state.

While urging Nigerians to embrace constructive criticism, Umahi said the Tinubu administration remains receptive to genuine feedback aimed at improving governance.

Representing the President at the event, Governor Sani reaffirmed Tinubu's commitment to Birnin Gwari, recalling that the President had visited the community before assuming office and pledged to reconstruct the road despite the prevailing security challenges.

He said the commencement of the project demonstrates that President Tinubu honours his promises, adding that no previous administration had matched the current government's commitment to infrastructure development in Northern Nigeria.

Also speaking, the Emir of Birnin Gwari, Zubairu Jibril Maigwari II, commended the Federal Government and the governors of the affected states for the progress recorded in tackling insecurity, noting that improved security has enabled farmers to return to their farmlands after years of displacement.
