Nigeria's Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi on Tuesday in Abuja, made a fresh appeal to people of the South-East, particularly the Igbo, to support President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election, citing the administration’s infrastructure projects and other interventions in the region.

Umahi made the call at the Headquarters of the Ministry while addressing Senior Special Assistants to the President on Community Engagement and Students Affairs, the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, and other student representatives.

The minister urged South-East leaders to educate their people on what he described as the benefits of the Tinubu administration, insisting that the region should assess the President on his record in infrastructure, appointments and inclusion.

According to him, “it is very important for us to know that somebody from South-East may not be able to do what President Bola Tinubu is doing for the people of South-East.”

He added: “We have to now campaign to educate our people and let them know that it is the right of every Igbo man to support President Bola Tinubu.”

Umahi also called for issue-based debates ahead of the 2027 election, challenging those seeking to replace Tinubu to explain what they would do differently from the present administration.

He said the Federal Government’s road construction programme was contributing to economic activity and security, noting that improved road networks could help reduce criminal activities along previously inaccessible routes.

The minister also disclosed plans to mobilise 4,000 social media influencers to showcase Federal Government infrastructure projects and communicate their impact to Nigerians.

“We have to fight the social media war. So, we have to launch 4,000 social media influencers to tell our stories,” he said.

Umahi commended NANS for undertaking inspections of federal infrastructure projects, describing the initiative as responsible leadership because the students were visiting project sites to assess developments themselves.

He said the Ministry of Works would also consider infrastructure requests from tertiary institutions, including the University of Abuja and Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, particularly where such interventions would improve students’ safety and welfare.
