AMB. (DR) YUSUF MAITAMA SULE IS DEAD

Foremost northern politician and erudite scholar, Amb. (Dr.) Yusuf Maitama Sule (DanMasani Kano) is dead.


The late Maitama Sule who is among one of the region's most respected leaders, who has been ill for a while from a heart related disease, was said to have been flown out of Kano two days ago to Cairo, in Egypt where he eventually gave up the ghost.

As one Nigeria's politician, an internationally acclaimed orator and diplomat, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Sule's involvement in the political space dates back to the early years of the country's independence and, in 1976, he became the Federal Commissioner of Public Complaints, a position that made him the nation’s pioneer ombudsman.

In the return to democratic rule in 1979, Maitama Sule was a presidential candidate of the National Party of Nigeria but lost to Shehu Shagari.

His loss at the polls saw to his appointment as Nigeria’s representative to the United Nations where he was elected chairman of the United Nations Special Committee against Apartheid.

Speaking to NAIJ NEWS ALERT on phone, Saidu Abdullahi says the death of the respected leader, although a big loss not only to the good people of Kano state but also to Nigeria where his words of wise counsel would have come to bear on this present crop of politicians in Nigeria.
"It's a big loss", he said.

Various political leaders have continued to condole the family and government of Kano state even as the state government has declared Tuesday as Public Holiday in hia memory.

The late Ambassador (Dr) Yusuf Maitama Sule died at the age of 88 years.
