It was a gathering of who's who in the party which many described as long over due for an opposition party which is desirous of relaunching itself back to power.
However, what took the meeting to another plane was the Senator Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi's declaration to run for the exalted office of Nigeria’s plum position of President, come 2019.
The jam-packed hall at the state Secretariat saw the entire gathering endorsing the former National Caretaker Committee chairman's political aspirations ahead of his full and total declaration.
Stakeholders present at the State Executive Committee (SEC) meeting described Senator Makarf as eminently qualified to contest the Presidency ticket on the platform of the party come 2019 as, not only has APC destroyed the nation, the ruling government lacks the very basic ingredients for leadership. They described the situation as pathetic, dismal and a shame.
Makarfi's endorsement followed the call for a voice vote by Dr. Mukhtar Ramalan Yero, former governor of the state who had asked the gathering if they would support Ahmed Makarfi's bid for President.
The response was a thunderous shout of "Nigeria; Sai Makarfi" which reviberated even across the entire premises to the ever busy Aliyu Akilu road causing commuters and motorists alike to stop and inquire what the occasion was all about. filled the air.
It should be recalled that other chieftains of the PDP had hitherto, signified their intentions to also pursue the presidential election on the platform of the party thereby, bringing the number of likely contestants, including Makarfi, to three. The other top contenders are the former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and Alhaji Sule Lamido, the former Governor of Jigawa state.
Also on the list are incumbent of Gombe state, Ibrahim Dankwambo and Malam Ibrahim.
However the party's primaries will be the deciding factor as, whoever emerges, will expectedly slug it out with incumbent President, Muhammadu Buhari should he decide to seek re-election and is offered his party's ticket.
Analysts have posited that the odds favour the PDP as many Nigerians have expressed their disenchantment with the All Progressives Congress, APC but how the PDP hopes to win the hearts of the electorates, remains the challenge.
