Armed gunmen have again, left a trail of dead bodies and scored injured following an attack on Gwaska village in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna state leaving over 45 persons dead.

Grieving members of the community are reportedly grieving over the death of loved ones, especially children and women who were lost in the armed attack as tears and wailing rent the air.

In what was described as a horrific scene, eyewitnesses say over forty-five dead bodies have so far been recovered with many still unaccounted for.

Sources within the Birnin-Gwari Vanguards for Security and Good Governance disclosed that "volunteers numbering over five hundred with the assistance of handful soldiers this afternoon recovered over 45 dead bodies from around the village.

A statement issued by the group on Sunday, quoted one of the vigilantes as saying that "the tensed atmosphere and untidy nature of the village environment necessitated the evacuation of forty-five bodies discovered for burial rites in Birnin-Gwari town".

One of the volunteers who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the search and rescue operation continues at Gwaska while also expressing feara that, "the number of the dead will likely rise as many bodies are still in the bushes".

According to the statement, "while we commend the resilience of the brave vigilantes and volunteers, we equally call on the people of Birnin-Gwari to remain calm and vigilant for the armed bandits.

The Kaduna state Governor, Mallam Nasir Ahmed el-Rufai has since condoled with the people of the area even as he promised additional provision of a battalion of soldiers to the area.

The local government has, in recent times witnessed are attack which has left many dead.

It would be recalled that the most recent was last week which saw the Inspector General of Police visiting the area three days ago.

Concerned residents have expressed their fears that this attack is one too many as they called on the state and federal government to speedy up the processes of containing these attacks across the state and the nation at large.
