Fear and apprehension has gripped travellers in the nation's capital, Abuja as armed men suspected to be kidnappers have on Thursday morning, reportedly attacked an Abuja bound train with guns and other projectiles.
According to available reports, the train had departed the Rigasa Train Station, Thursday morning at about 10 am but allegedly came attack, some seventy kilometres to Abuja, few kilometres to Katari.
A passenger on the train told Vanguard that the train came under what he called “ballistic projectiles attack” but no passenger was hurt in the incidence.
Efforts to ascertain the level of damage to the train as at the time of this report, was futile.
Many passengers who were hitherto scheduled to take the next shuttle, abruptly cancelled their trips due to fears over the development.
A top staff of the Nigerian Railway Corporation who spoke with Naij News Alert under the condition of anonymity, said the incident was not a gun attack but "projectiles" thrown at the coaches.
"Coach SP 12 had its glass shattered as a result of the incident and yes, passengers were scared. No passenger sustained injuries", the staff stated.
However, speaking with NNA, Suleiman Isa, a regular commuter of the Kaduna-Abuja train service disclosed that Government urgently has to do something about this daring move by suspected kidnappers on the train.
According to Isa, "this is just too much. Who do you blame when virtually all security personnel and officers travelling from and to Abuja, now travel by rail with their details in tow, thereby, abandoning the road users to their fate".
"If the security agencies already know the dangerous areas, as has been reported severally, what stops them from intensifying their search and operations to curtail the activities of these hoodlums?, he queried.
