“Government should pay youths who are interested in learning skill. They should provide them with a little take home to take care of their expenses. Whatever may be the case, the training should be subsidized. There should be subvention for skill acquisition attendees." Onuesoke.

Chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Sunny Onuesoke has raised concerns following the 3increasing absence of skilled workers within the work space of the society, identified as an integral aspect of growth and development of a nation’s economy.

According to Chief Onuesoke, a former gubernatorial aspirant in Delta state, the urge of youths to make quick money, at the detriment of their well-being, has brought about the extinction of skilled or artisan workers in Nigeria.

The PDP Chieftain who made the observation during a telephone chat with our correspondent, disclosed that the  country is undergoing an alarming shortage of artisan workers because the youths are more interested in making money through internet fraud or other quick means and as such, they look at going to school or learn a good trade as scam.

“Artisan workers are fast depleting.  There are shortages of skill workers to support the growth and development of the nation’s economy. No mechanic, no electrician, no plumber, no carpenter. It is amazing that artisan workers come from Cotonou, Togo and other West Africa countries to build our PoP and do carpentry work for us.

“The children do not want to learn work. They classify education as scam. They want to indulge in making quick money.  Even now, no child wants to become a mechanic, plumber, electrician  or  technician. Right now, there are shortages of artisan workers and support crews because the children do not want to go back to school,” he noted.

To rescue the situation, Onuesoke appealed to both the state and Federal government to intensify their skill acquisition projects by subsidizing it to attract the youths into picking interest in artisanship and for the children to acquire skills in which they will use to support the growth of the economy.

He advised that the youths should be encouraged to learn skill by subsidizing the training by providing them with little take home and feeding allowances in the course of the training.

Maybe two meals in a day with pocket money by the end of the month. It will encourage the children to learn skill,” he advised.
