Industry, Trade, and Investment Ministry Hosts Workshop on OIML Certification System

Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, Amb. Nura Abba Rimi represented by Mr. Sule Dafan, Director, Federal Produce, flanked to his right by the Director of Weights and Measures department of the Ministry, Mr.Olajide Adesuyi Bamidele and to his left by the Deputy Director, Mr. Salim M. Mohammed during the opening ceremony of a 3-day capacity building workshop on the administration of OIML Certification system for Zonal Coordinators of Weights and measures Department in, Nasarawa State on Tuesday.

The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment, Amb. Nura Abba Rimi has emphasized the critical role that weights and measures play in modern life, which, according to him, has standards that ensure fair trade, protect consumer rights, and drive economic development.

The Permanent Secretary stated this at a three-day capacity-building workshop for the Weights and Measures Department of the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment that held recently at the Global Village Hotel and Suites in One-man Village, along Keffi Road. 

The focus of the workshop was the administration of the OIML (International Organization of Legal Metrology) Certification System for Zonal Coordinators of Weights and Measures.

Amb. Nura Abba Rimi, who was represented at the event represented by Mr. Sule Idi Dafang, Director of the Federal Produce Inspection Service, in his opening address, noted that, “Today marks a significant step forward. The field of weights and measures is not just about numbers; it’s about fairness, consumer protection, and economic growth. 

"As Zonal Coordinators, your role is pivotal in upholding the integrity and accuracy of measurements within your respective regions.” He stated.

He emphasised that the OIML Certification System is not merely bureaucratic jargon. "It is a powerful framework that recognizes conformity assessment results related to legal metrology. Beyond that, it fosters collaboration by facilitating mutual acceptance of test results across borders. In essence, it is a bridge that promotes international trade while maintaining unwavering standards of measurement accuracy and reliability.

"The workshop promises to be transformative. Coordinators will delve into the intricacies of the OIML Certification System, exploring its principles, processes, and best practices. Armed with this knowledge, they will be better equipped to oversee certification activities within their zones.

Amb. Nura’s stressed that, “By gaining a comprehensive understanding of these elements, you will not only enhance your professional capabilities but also contribute significantly to the growth and development of our nation.”

At the event, Coordinators exchanged ideas, eager to leverage this platform for positive change. 

The theme of the event was; “Empowering Coordinators: Weights and Measures Workshop Sets the Stage for Progress.”
