NSITF Restores Hope: Injured Workers Get New Limbs, New Lives

The Managing Director and Chief Executive of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF), Oluwaseun Faleye, has reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to restoring hope and dignity to Nigerian workers through the Employees’ Compensation Scheme (ECS).

Faleye made this known in Abuja during the presentation of prosthetic limbs to 10 beneficiaries under the scheme, describing the initiative as a lifeline for workers who suffer injuries in the course of their duties.

Represented by the General Manager, Claims and Compensation, Mrs. Nkiru Ogunnike, the NSITF boss said the ECS has continued to transform lives by supporting the rehabilitation and reintegration of injured workers into society.

According to him, the scheme goes beyond statutory compensation, reflecting a humane approach that restores confidence and preserves the dignity of workers affected by occupational hazards.

“Workplace accidents often result not only in physical injuries but also emotional trauma and uncertainty about the future,” he said, noting that a single incident can permanently alter the course of a worker’s life.

He, however, stressed that the intervention of the NSITF provides victims with a second chance to rebuild their lives and regain independence.

Faleye cited the experiences of beneficiaries, including Daniel Etim of the University of Uyo Printing Press and Festus Okpara of Tower Aluminium Laos, as evidence of the scheme’s far-reaching impact.

Daniel lost his arm in May 2024 after it was trapped in an industrial machine during routine operations, leading to amputation. Through the ECS, his medical treatment was fully covered, and he was subsequently provided with a prosthetic arm.

“Beyond the payment of medical bills, the Fund extended further rehabilitative support by providing him with a prosthetic arm, reaffirming its commitment not only to compensation but also to restoring dignity, confidence, and functionality,” Faleye said.

Similarly, Festus, who lost his hand in a workplace accident in 2015, endured years of emotional trauma and social discomfort. The provision of a silicone prosthetic hand by the NSITF has helped him regain confidence and a sense of inclusion.

“For beneficiaries like Daniel and Festus, the interventions of the NSITF represent hope, restoration, and reassurance that injured workers are not left to navigate tragedy alone,” the MD added.

He emphasized that the scheme also addresses the often-overlooked psychological impact of workplace injuries, noting that emotional scars can persist long after physical wounds have healed.

Faleye reiterated that the ECS remains a critical social protection mechanism, serving as a safety net for workers across both the public and private sectors.

One of the beneficiaries, Festus Okpara, expressed gratitude for the intervention, saying, “I thank NSITF for coming all this way to help. At least with this, I can go out in public and feel free. NSITF has reduced the level of trauma.”

The 10 beneficiaries are part of 78 individuals recently fitted with artificial limbs under the NSITF’s ongoing rehabilitation and reintegration programme, further underscoring the agency’s commitment to improving the lives of injured Nigerian workers.
