"We call on lawmakers and the Minister of Works to step up and restore these roads to a standard befitting a region integral to Nigeria’s unity and progress. The poor state of these roads not only hampers development but also perpetuates insecurity, as criminals exploit these neglected corridors for nefarious activities."

The Igbo Community Association in the Federal Capital Territory (ICA FCT) on Tuesday expressed its concern following the glaring imbalance in resource allocation, evident in the deplorable state of road networks connecting Abuja to the South East. 

According to the body, in a statement issued and signed by its President General and Secretary General; Engr Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe and Mazi Emmanuel Chinwoke Onah, respectively, "For decades, these roads have suffered neglect, becoming some of the most dilapidated in the nation. Abandoned by lawmakers and the Federal Government, they have turned into havens for criminals, thereby posing grave safety risks to travelers and undermining economic activities in the region."

The group cautioned that "continued neglect fuels youth unrest, cripples trade, and further entrenches feelings of marginalization among the people of the South East. The association views this as unacceptable and urges the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency on these roads. As citizens travel these routes this holiday season, their safety and dignity must be prioritized.

"We call on lawmakers and the Minister of Works to step up and restore these roads to a standard befitting a region integral to Nigeria’s unity and progress. "We emphasize that the South East remains a vital part of Nigeria, contributing significantly to the nation's economy and development," the group stated while also demanding better infrastructure, security, and equitable resource allocation. 

"The people of the South East deserve safe passage, improved livelihoods, and genuine inclusion in Nigeria’s growth narrative.

"We warn that the patience of South East communities is wearing thin. Come 2027, if our lawmakers fail to act decisively on this issue, we will not hesitate to mobilize voters against their re-election. The ballot is a powerful tool, and we will use it to hold leaders accountable. It’s time for Igbo lawmakers to prove they’re working for their people, not just occupying seats.
