Fire Readiness Put to Test as TCN, Fire Service Stage Emergency Drill

The Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) Department of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), in collaboration with the Nigerian Fire Service, on Tuesday conducted a comprehensive fire drill at its Corporate Headquarters in Abuja, testing the responsiveness of staff and visitors to emergency evacuation procedures.

The simulation, held on April 28, 2026, commenced with the activation of the building’s fire alarm system, triggering a swift evacuation of TCN staff, personnel of the Federal Ministry of Power, and visitors to a designated muster point. The exercise was designed to assess preparedness and reinforce safety protocols in the event of a real fire incident.

Addressing participants after the drill, the General Manager, HSE, Engr. Ahmed Rufai Ibrahim, described the exercise as a success, commending the coordinated and prompt response of all involved.

He said the drill “was successful,” noting that the swift action of staff, visitors, management, and fire service personnel “marked a significant step in strengthening emergency preparedness at the Headquarters.”

Also speaking, the Principal Manager (Fire Safety), Mr. Monday Johnson, praised the orderly conduct of the evacuation, urging that such drills be sustained to deepen awareness and readiness among personnel.

A representative of the Nigerian Fire Service, Kolade John, reiterated that the exercise was purely a simulation, stressing the critical need for familiarity with evacuation procedures in public buildings.

He warned that “fire incidents can occur at any time,” underscoring the importance of constant vigilance and preparedness.

The drill, observers noted, highlights TCN’s commitment to maintaining a safe working environment and equipping its workforce with the skills required for effective emergency response.
