Power Project Payouts Begin as TCN Compensates 2,000 Affected Residents

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has commenced the second phase of compensation for Project Affected Persons (PAPs) impacted by the 330kV Double Circuit Mando–Rimin Zakara Transmission Line Project, with over 2,000 beneficiaries already paid.

The exercise, which began on May 7, 2026, in Shika, Zaria, forms part of efforts to ensure a smooth and safe execution of the critical power infrastructure project. TCN reiterated that clearing the Right of Way (RoW) remains a key prerequisite for all transmission projects, aimed at safeguarding infrastructure and ensuring operational efficiency.

Speaking during the exercise, the Project Manager, Omobola Odusoga Sobo, disclosed that a total of 5,500 PAPs were identified along the transmission corridor, with the current phase covering about 2,000 individuals.

She commended district heads and community leaders for their role in sensitising residents on the importance of the project and the compensation process. Sobo also acknowledged the support of the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of TCN, Sule Abdulaziz, alongside backing from the African Development Bank.

In his remarks, the District Head of Rigasa, Muhammed Aminu Idris, described the exercise as largely transparent and inclusive, noting that continuous engagement with host communities had strengthened trust. He expressed optimism that the transmission project would boost electricity supply and drive socio-economic growth across Kaduna and Kano corridors.

The compensation process began with a detailed screening and verification phase, during which claimants presented original documents for authentication before payment. TCN said the approach was designed to ensure that only legitimate beneficiaries were compensated, in line with its commitment to accountability and due process.

Some beneficiaries, including Lawal Abubakar, Shehu Muhammad and Muhammad Lawal, praised the transparency of the exercise and pledged continued support for the project.

The transmission line, stretching from Mando in Kaduna State to Rimin Zakara in Kano State, will include a Turn-In Turn-Out (TITO) connection at a new 2x150MVA substation in Jaja, Zaria. The project is part of broader initiatives by the Federal Government, with support from the African Development Bank, to strengthen Nigeria’s transmission capacity, enhance grid reliability, and support industrial growth in the northern region.
