Nigeria has taken a major step towards accelerating its digital transformation agenda with the launch of a new phase of the Digital Switch Over (DSO) programme, a project projected to unlock over ₦600 billion in economic opportunities while delivering digital broadcasting services to more than 40 million homes nationwide.

Speaking at the official launch of the DSO programme, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NIGCOMSAT Limited, Jane Egerton-Idehen, described the initiative as far more than a broadcasting upgrade, stressing that it represents a strategic national investment designed to deepen inclusion, expand economic opportunities and drive Nigeria's digital future.

Addressing government officials, industry stakeholders, development partners and media representatives, the NIGCOMSAT boss said the DSO project aligns with the Federal Government's Renewed Hope Agenda and will play a pivotal role in ensuring that every Nigerian, regardless of location, has access to information, education, entertainment and opportunities.

According to Egerton-Idehen, the transition from analogue to digital broadcasting marks a significant milestone in Nigeria's technological evolution and will usher in a new era of improved service delivery across the broadcasting ecosystem.

"Behind every television screen is a story; a family seeking information, a student seeking knowledge, an entrepreneur seeking opportunity, and a nation seeking progress," she said.

She noted that while analogue broadcasting had served Nigeria effectively for decades by connecting families, informing citizens and entertaining generations, the demands of the modern digital age now require more advanced and efficient systems.

"The DSO programme", she explained, "will deliver superior picture quality, clearer sound, more television channels, greater content diversity, improved spectrum efficiency and enhanced viewing experiences for millions of Nigerians."

Beyond improved broadcasting services, the NIGCOMSAT chief highlighted the wider economic impact of the initiative, saying it would create substantial opportunities for local content producers, broadcasters, technology companies, advertisers, investors and young innovators.

She described the project as a catalyst for job creation and growth within the creative, media and technology sectors, adding that it would provide a larger platform for Nigerian talent and innovation to thrive.
