TCN Faults AEDC Over Abuja Power Supply Claim, Says Low Generation Responsible

The Transmission Company of Nigeria has dismissed a claim by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company that the recent reduction in electricity allocation to its customers was caused by the tripping of transmission lines supplying Abuja from the Shiroro Transmission Substation.

TCN, in a statement issued by its management on Wednesday, described the AEDC claim as inaccurate and misleading, insisting that the reduction in the DisCo’s allocation was caused by low electricity generation on the national grid.

AEDC had informed its customers on August 26 of prevailing power supply constraints, attributing a drop in its allocation from about 641 megawatts to 314MW to the alleged tripping of transmission lines supplying the Abuja axis from Shiroro.

However, TCN said the explanation was incorrect, stressing that all 330kV transmission lines within the Abuja Region were currently in circuit.

“Contrary to the information contained in AEDC’s publication, all 330kV transmission lines within Abuja Region are currently in circuit,” the transmission company said, adding that no tripping of the 330kV transmission lines supplying the Abuja axis had occurred as alleged.

The clarification effectively shifts responsibility for the reduction in power available to AEDC away from the transmission network, with TCN maintaining that the prevailing supply challenge was primarily linked to inadequate generation.

TCN further stated that the reduction in AEDC’s allocation, and the consequent load shedding across its feeders, could not be attributed to any alleged tripping of its 330kV transmission lines in the Abuja Region.

The company urged stakeholders to ensure accurate and clear dissemination of information concerning developments on the national electricity grid, stressing that misleading explanations could create unnecessary concerns among electricity consumers.

TCN reiterated its commitment to transmitting available bulk electricity efficiently across the country while maintaining the stability, reliability and integrity of the national transmission grid.
