TCN, NISO, KEDCO Plan Load Diversion for Kano Power Line Upgrade

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) and other stakeholders have agreed to coordinate a planned power outage and load diversion to facilitate the elongation of two transmission towers on the Kumbotso–Dan Agundi 132kV transmission line in Kano State.

The decision followed a coordination meeting held in Kano on October 5, involving TCN, Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), project contractors and the Kano State Ministry of Works.

The meeting, chaired by the General Manager, Transmission, Kano Region, Engr. M. K. Bello, focused on the proposed outage and alternative electricity supply arrangements to ensure the safe execution of the project without compromising grid stability.

Bello expressed confidence in the contractors' competence but stressed the need for a thorough assessment of all proposed technical connections and switching arrangements before implementation.

He said the measures were necessary to safeguard operational safety and maintain the reliability of the transmission network.

The NISO Regional Operations Coordinator, Engr. Kunle Egbedinni, emphasised strict compliance with the Grid Code, particularly the requirement for planned outage applications to be submitted at least 14 days in advance for approval.

Also speaking, the Head of Operations and Maintenance at KEDCO, Engr. Sabiu Haruna, proposed diverting electricity supplied through the Dan Agundi 132kV Substation to alternative substations within a proposed two-day outage window.

The substations identified for the diversion include Dakata 132kV, Tamburawa 132kV, Rimin Zakara 330kV, Kumbotso 330kV and Wudil 132kV.

Participants subsequently reviewed the capacity of the transmission network and available alternatives to ensure adequate power supply during the planned exercise.

They observed that the Hadejia 132kV Substation could not accommodate the entire 60-megawatt load earmarked for diversion, prompting further assessments of supply options through the Tamburawa, Rimin Zakara and Dakata substations.

The stakeholders also highlighted the need to prioritise the safety of personnel and equipment throughout the operation.

The meeting ended with a commitment by the participating agencies to strengthen inter-agency coordination, comply with regulatory requirements and ensure the timely execution of the transmission infrastructure project.

TCN disclosed the development in a statement signed by its management and dated October 13, 2026.
