PROLIFRATION OF GAS PLANTS IN KADUNA: NSCDC Sets To Collaborate With DPR

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, in collaboration with the Department of Petroleum Resources, DPR, has commenced strategies to combat illegal LPG Gas Plants and Depots in Kaduna state.
A statement from the NSCDC Kaduna Command reveals that, as part of measures to address the proliferation of illegal gas refilling outlets in Kaduna State, the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), is to collaborate with Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC in tackling the menace.
The statement which was signed by ASC Orndiir Terzungwe, State PRO on behalf of the State Commandant, disclosed that the decision was taken on Thursday, January 9th, 2020 when the Northwest Zonal Operations Controller of DPR, Mr Isah Tafida, paid a visit to the State Commandant of Corps, Babangida Abdullahi Dutsinma.
According to Terzungwe, "the visit was in response to the unfortunate incident at Sabon-Tasha, Chikun Local Government Area which claimed many lives and properties", he said.
The NSCDC Kaduna Command spokesman disclosed that during visit, "the DPR Kaduna Zonal Operations Controller, Isa Tafida remarked that the situation has assumed a worrisome dimension hence, a closer working relationship between the duo to avert further disasters".
"The current situation requires a closer working relationship between the DPR and NSCDC in order to contend excesses of unlicensed operators", he stressed.
The Zonal Controller said the office has registered only 38 licensing gas plants in Kaduna and frowned at the menace of illegal proliferation of gas refilling points, a situation he restated must be checked.
He (Tafida) explained that DPR is embarking on high sensitization of utilization of LPG to enlighten the public on how to use gas and where to get it in support of the present administration’s policy to encourage its usage as a source of energy for cooking.
According to Tafida, the Federal government encourages utilization of cooking gas as alternative to reduce over dependence of firewood considering the devastating effects of desertification.
"As a major producer of gas in Africa and 4th producer and exporter globally", Tafida said; "there is need for more people to rely on it for energy thus the planned sensitization".
Responding, Commandant Babangida Abdullahi Dutsinma, commended DPR for its efforts in protecting the economy of the country.
Dutsinma pledged his support towards the sensitization programme particularly as he promised to provide security during enforcement, surveillance and inspection exercises which will be taken to all local government areas.
Prior to the visit, the Kaduna State command of NSCDC had written to DPR on the gas explosion at Sabon-Tasha which claimed the lives of one Professor Simon Mallam and five others, aside from those who sustained different degrees of burns and destruction of properties.
