EKITI GOV APPOINTS RELATIVE AS PROVOST OF STATE OWNED EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION

"In the last one year, the College has lost accreditation of all its courses owing to lack of qualified personnel".

The appointment of one Mrs Folakemi Falore, a retired Permanent Secretary in the State as Acting Provost, is currently raising tension in the Ekiti State owned College of Health Sciences and Technology, Ijero Ekiti.

Mrs Falore was appointed as Sole Administrator of the College in January 2019, after serving as member of the Visitation Panel for the College, set up on October 29, 2018, by Governor Kayode Fayemi.

Appointment of Mrs Falore, was contained in a circular dated July 2, 2020, and signed by the Acting Registrar,  Mrs C. A.  Ogunsakin.

“The college community is hereby notified of the appointment of Mrs Folakemi Falore (Sole Administrator) as the Acting Provost of the College with effect from 1st July, 2020.

“Consequently, the entire College Community is to take notice of the new appointment and the new nomenclature,  accordingly.”

Mrs Falore, who is said to be related maternally to the State Governor,  Dr Kayode Fayemi, holds Bsc in Health Education and was Permanent Secretary in the State Primary Health Care Development Agency,  with less than five executive staff under her.

According to the Ekiti State College of Health Sciences and Technology Law, 2019, substantive or acting Provost is expected to have a minimum of Masters Degree and be a specialist in Public Health or other related fields, with PhD as an added advantage.

The Provost must also possess relevant Health related discipline with at least 15 years cognate experience in teaching, research and Higher Institution

Administration.

Furthermore, the person to be appointed as Provost must not be below the rank of a Chief Lecturer in a College/Polytechnic or an Associate Professor in a university and shall have not less than 10 publications in health related Journals.

Meanwhile, sources within the College lamented that in the last one year, the College has lost accreditation of all its courses owing to lack of qualified personnel.

The only course in the college with accreditation is said to be Environmental Health Technician/Assistant.

Accreditation of courses like Pharmacy, Medical Laboratory and Health Information Management Technology, Community Health Extension Worker expired last year and they were not renewed.

As at 2018, all courses being run by the College were accredited, but the accreditations were not renewed owing to lack of qualified personnel.

Most of the qualified staff of the College who were instrumental to the accreditation of the courses have either been sacked or redeployed to the State Civil Service.

Apart from the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE),  other bodies responsible for accreditation of courses in Colleges of Health Sciences are Medical Records Registration Council of Nigeria, West Africa health Examinations Board, Pharmacist Council of Nigeria, Medical Laboratory Scientists Council of Nigeria, Community Health Practitioners Board of Nigeria and Dental Therapists Board of Nigeria.
